Why do I have to download this in order to get a private message? I never had to do that with the old boards.

You don't. You are seeing an ad. Just Click on your username and select Conversations.

You do NOT need to download anything to get PM's. What you are seeing is likely an advertisement at the top of your screen.

To see PMs, click on the work "Inbox" near the upper-right, between your username and "Alerts"
