Those of you who use a down comfortor, do you also use a duvet to cover it? We just bought a down comfortor and of course it's white, but it just looks incomplete without a cover. Doesn't it get filthy without a cover? Does the comfortor slip around inside the cover or does it stay put?

I couldn't believe how warm we were last night- it's ALL down- no feathers!

I just bought one and for now it is sans duvet--duvets are kind of pricey and I just don't have the money.

My former bedspread is still the top cover and we have a top sheet underneath it...so it will stay fairly clean.

Eventually I will get a duvet for it though, for decoration purposes.

My first down comforter--so I do not know how well it stays in place in the duvet.

I use a duvet on mine. You can also take two queen or one king flat sheet (depending on size) and make your own duvet. I also use my flat sheet under the comforter. This way I don't have to wash the duvet cover as often as the sheets. Usually every other time is good. You will find it isn't easy getting the duvet on the comforter, especially if it is huge like mine.

We use a duvet to keep the comforter clean. It doesn't get 'dirty', but its like have a bottom sheet with no top sheet. Down comforters are so warm. Our dog ate a hole in our last one and we had feathers everywhere! Time to get a new one.

We tried a duvet and hated it. The down comforter is so light, but it was heavy with the duvet.

We always used a duvet to keep the comforter white, and because I really liked the look of the duvet.
I no longer have a down comforter on my bed, too hot!

We have a duvet over ours, all three actually. We have one on each guest bed as well. We found some pretty reasonable sets at Linen and Things in the past. Our master bedroom set was much more expensive, but I knew what I wanted and that was the only one I could find.

They stay put in the duvet, and are a pain to put in. DH always puts the comforters in the duvets for me.

we dont' have a down comforter...but we do have a duvet cover over our cheapie comforter.

the dog sleeps on the bed with us...we need the duvet...have to wash it weekly! (she sheds)

I've gotten good deals at Linens-N-Things on duvets..."sets" for $40 or under...(queen sized with 2 shams). I dont' like to spend alot on them as I wash them so often...but the ones I've bought do hold up/wash well.

eTA - it used to be a pain to put the comforter into the duvet after washing it. However now, after using a duvet for over 4 years, I've gotten pretty good at it and can get it done quickly.

Our down comforter sits between sheets and bedspread, so no need for a duvet.

Yes I would get a duvet...
the one I had it did NOT stay in place and it was a pain in the butt...
and the one I had the buttons holes wore out (it was from JCPenney) of course with the new house I don't want to buy a new one now til I know the style of the room - and mine is over the flat sheet and under a cheap Walmart comforter - lol

I use a duvet cover with my down comforter. Every couple of weeks I have to adjust the comforter in the duvet, but it's easy and I don't even have to take it out to do it. I like the fact that I can switch out covers if I want to without spending a small fortune (well unless I choose to, LOL, covers come in all ranges of prices).

You can get a duvet cover on overstock for pretty cheap. We use them on our down comforters.

I would love to have a duvet for my comforter. but, they cost as much as the comforter. Why is that????

This thread reminds me of the pilot episode of King of Queens. Carrie has finally allowed Doug to make the basement is "guy" room. he goes out and buys the HUGE tv. He is so excited. His friends come over. they are having a great time down in his "guy" room. Then, Carrie's father's house burn down. Dad has to move in (the 1st episode Carrie had a sister, they argued over who was taking dad in, I have not seen the sister since).

Doug is devasted, but there was nothing he could do. they get dad settle in downstairs, and the last scene of the episode, they show 3 adult grown men, squished in his bed, the TV is at the foot of the bed, but the footboard blocks the bottom half of the screen. His best friend (brain freeze, can't think of his name) is griping about not being able to see the score at the bottom. there in each other's space. Snacking on something. Carrie pops in, asks how it is going, she aks if they are getting crumbs on the duvet. Doug says "No way, I would never do that, not the duvet" She smiles, says great and leaves. they 3 of them look at each other and Doug asks, "what the HELL is a duvet?" :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

1st pilot episode, and I wet my pants laughing. I knew it was going to be a success.

Tinijocaro,
Can I ask what kind of down comforter you purchased and where you bought it? My sister and I are both looking for one. I have been eyeing one on lands end website. I know nothing about them. I just bought a duvet cover and I'm planning on sticking my regular comforter in there until I can get a down one. DD has been yelling for one because her room is cold in the winter. Might be the answer for her as well! ;)

Thanks!

I got it at JC Penney yesterday, 50% off but it was still close to $200.00.

Thanks for all the replies, I'll probably check overstock for a Dubet, I just don't like the look of the plain white, it looks unfinished to me.

I love down comforters, but how do you keep a king size comforter from getting bunched up in a ball in one corner???

We did not have success with ours, and therefore, threw everything out.

My friend just told me she sewed ties to the inside of each corner of the duvet, and sewed ties to the corners of the comforter, then tied them together.
