I didn't look at those links, but I learned my ornament recipe from dd's pre-K teacher who has been doing this for years and years:
Mix applesauce with cinnamon until you have good dough consistency. (not too sticky to work with). That's it! You can roll them out, cut with cookie cutters, do handprints, carve words into them, paint them or glitter them, whatever. They will dry on their own with no baking, or to speed things up if you can't wait, put in a low heat oven until dry. Make sure to make a hole in them before drying or baking (a straw works well for this) to put the ribbon in for hanging on tree (can't do it after it hardens!)
These smell amazing! Of course, if you want ornaments that will last for generations, you may want to use actual "cement" or clay or something that won't break as easily. These last a couple years if careful, but probably wouldn't last until your kids become grandparents or anything!
