The area is fine... just be smart (ie: not walking around by yourself at night). There are a TON of resaurants within a 5-10 mile radius, just depends what you want.
You have the whole slew of fast food places - just head over to Kennedy Blvd.
There is Maggiano's and PF Chang's at Westshore Plaza - Starbucks too (right near the Old Navy entrance for easy run in/out)
Then at International Plaza there is The Cheesecake Factory, Capital Grill ($$$), California Pizza Kitchen and Ocean Prime ($$$).
Plus both malls have a food court.
Misc places w/in 10 miles : Shula's (on Kennedy), LeeRoy Selmon's (Boy Scout Rd), Ruth's Chris Steak House $$$ (WestShore), Chipotle Mexican (WestShore Blvd), Kona Grill (Boy Scout Rd), Panera Bread (2 in the area), Gogos Greek (Kennedy), Flemmings $$$ (Boy Scout).
If you want FANTASTIC Cuban food that is cheap - La Teresita on Columbus (come out of WestShore turn right on Spruce/Boy Scout Rd - cross Dale Mabry - pass Himes - it's a coral colored bldg on the right). Ropa Veija, fried plátanos and the media noche (hot melted Cuban sandwich on egg bread) - OMG!
Also, Dale Mabry has all the chains - you can take Cypress to it and turn right.
