Currently have a reservation for Jan 30 to Feb 6. It can be cancelled with full refund 5 days prior to check in.

Given the vagaries of weather that time of year, considering making a second booking for early March (more $) that can also be cancelled with no charge. If the long range forecast for Jan 30 to Feb 6 looks poor, would be going at this time.

Has anyone else managed the weather risk this way? Can't think of any downside.....

The only problem of course is if many people do this, cancellation policies will change. However, not so many have the flexibility schedule wise?

the biggest danger for me would be having so much fun on the first trip that I'd keep the second one too

I believe if you book now with the current cancellation policy you could be "locked in" to that policy. But I'm not 100% on that
I will mention though that March is not for sure better than Jan/Feb.
We've been then and it got below freezing (they had to cover the flowers at the start of Flower and Garden). It sort of depends on when in March. The later the less chance of cold

Should have mentioned did not book through disney. The agency has full refund policy if cancelled at least 5 days in advance of checkin

Honestly, if you are solely basing it on weather, I would book March. No guarantees, but better chance of warmer weather.
