Don't want Holding Points

Just confirming. I have a reservation that starts March 4. I have to cancel by Feb 1 to keep my points out of holding, right? My poor dog had a stroke and is now paralyzed on her left side. We've started getting her to walk outside, but it's still hard to walk inside (hit up Walmart and Lowes today for cheap runners and rugs to cover our tile floors so she can get some traction). If she goes to the vet to board, we're not sure she's going to get the help round the clock that she needs (neither one of us are getting much sleep since she cries at night not being able to change positions or walk and we have to carry her outside to go to the bathroom a few times during the night). We're not sure if she isn't going to make the trip over the Rainbow Bridge soon or not as well (she also has an enlarged heart and congestive heart failure). This trip was to celebrate our 37th anniversary, but we can cancel and celebrate 38 next year instead.

Need to cancel more than 30 days from checkin to avoid holding points. The dvc website says cancelling from 30 days to 1 day prior to checkin causes holding points.

So sorry about your dog. I know that is a hard situation. Our 14 year old golden retriever had a stroke and had to be euthanized the same afternoon.

Yeah, I know 31 days out is the last day to cancel. With Feb being 28 days, you can't just go Feb 4 to Mar 4.

I'd believe that to be correct but you might want to call to verify. One time a short month (November) actually had me miscalculating the date that made me wonder what they would do when an even short month such as Feb would mean.

Best of luck with your pup! We have 2 aging dogs and it's changed our travel. In June one lost all control of his back - much discussion as he was 13 but otherwise in apparent good health and of a temperament that handles surgery ok. He had a ruptured disk and we decided on surgery. It was carrying him outside (and still is) but now he otherwise gets around and walked himself back in up ramps. Lots of rugs to provide grip on our wood floors too. Did your vet suggest any therapy exercises? As with humans it can be a restraining of the brain and some may help them to be able to get comfortable.

One thing on holding points - they really aren't as onerous as they sound. We've ended up with them a couple of times due to last minute cancellations and never had an issue using them plus it provides some extra freedom that was rather unexpected. You could see some last minute availability and just book it and then see if it would work or not. If you'd really like to try and make the trip it really isn't impossible to use holding points if you have any flexibility at all in travel.

Our vet gave us information on cremation and he wasn't sure she would last too much longer. But we've got her up and walking around. She just has a difficult time getting up or getting down. Poor thing is weak on her left side and tends to walk in circles and runs into things. But we put down a couple of runners and some rugs and she's been walking all around inside and outside. Especially when we have training treats in our hands. She slept through the night last night and we're hoping she will do it again tonight.

As for holding points, we already have another reservation for May and one for Sept (and our main UY is Sept). So, we might even cancel it on Jan 31 instead of Feb 1.

If you have another reservation for May, call MS and explain your situation to them. I remember someone was able to transfer their holding points into a future reservation they had.

I’m so sorry about your baby. Your family will be in my thoughts. It is such a gift to be able to take care of them as they have given so much. Dogs are gifts and make life so much better
