All checked bags are now screened, either scanned or searched. There is no longer any requirement that passengers fly on the same plane as their luggage. If you plan on standing by for an earlier flight SW will let you check your bags through on the earlier flight. Your bags will go even if you don't clear. Alternatively you'll have to make your own arrangements to get your bags from the airport.
This won't be a problem going to MCO if you're using DME. It can also work if you live close enough to the airport to back and retrieve your luggage or are willing to pay to have your luggage delivered.
Carol--RAC checked bags go a separate facility at MCO where they're scanned and stored. Airlines won't normally even conventionally checked bags. You were probably very persuasive in order to retrieve your bags.
