Don't talk us out of this--Very large family of 32 planning a trip

I have no advice , I just want to say that I admire all of you that go in large groups and I am especially jealous that your families can get along that well. Our families could NEVER go on vacation together, there would be a cat fight in 2 seconds of arrival!!:sad1:

Thanks everyone for the additional advice!!!

Grandmouse- do you know what the discount was for the 10+ rooms?
With all my initial excitement, I mis-counted. With the new baby, there will be 36 of us! If any of the older kids brough bf or gf, we could easily get to 10 rooms.

Thanks again!

Hi,

Your family sounds like ours! I come from a family of 5 siblings and we are always getting together to do things. We love it! There are a total of 35. Two parents that started it all, five children and spouses, and 23 grandchildren spreading from 18 to 3 months. We get together on an average of two times a month just for birthday parties!!:grouphug: Then we get together for all holidays and special annual functions and hiking and things to have fun together. We all wanted to give our kids what we had growing up which was big family functions and our cousins being some of our closest friends.:upsidedow When we were there in 2005 with my parents we talked about doing this as a family function. We talked with one of the hotels and they were great about suggesting ideas. I like the idea that one said of just hanging out at the resort. I could see our family doing a lot of that!!:p I could also see our family having a lot of fun at the water parks together! I'm not quite sure I could see us together doing all the rides together?!:scratchin Too many kids of differant ages!! I could see us breaking off into groups with differant ages of kids and cousins that wanted to ride on the same rides.:thumbsup2 Doing the restaurant thing would be a definate thing and planning for the adults to go out together for one meal would be something we would look into planning. The older siblings would sacrifice one meal time to watch their siblings.:faint:

My biggest thing I would suggest is to try your hardest to stay onsite!!!!:cool1: That in my opinion would make the whole trip! If your anything like my family, unless it doesn't matter....it's always hurry up and wait for someone. It makes all the differance in the world to be onsite!! Fun is at your doorstep.pixiedust: No driving to get there.:drive: When your hanging out together at where ever you are staying, your still in disney with the disney magic!pixiedust: You don't have to feel like you are waiting for someone to get going for the day. You are already there! My father said it didn't bother him at all in the mornings to wait for us to be ready to go to the park because he was already there and downstairs enjoying his coffee just enjoying himself while he waited. It's differant when you are waiting at an off site place and waiting for each other to get ready, you feel like the day hasn't started until you get to your destination for the day! It's easier to just go back to your room any time of the day!! Not so with an off site location. I think it would be easier to just hang after supper or the park closes when your are right there.

If you could possibly go in Sept for the possiblilty of free dining that would save a bundle and be AWESOME!!:p(the last two years during Sept. basically they have announced free dining for that time period - alot of people are hoping to hear of it coming out within the month. Also during that time there is Extra Magic hours for under 5 and their families- http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/wdw/experience/experienceLanding?id=PreschoolersExperiencePage Especially for such a big group. You could be a grand gathering and do some "special" events that only grand gatherings can do!!:cool1: I am looking into the Safari Celebration dinner and the rest that they have exclusive for just grand gatherings. BUT, as one pointed out to utilize Disney as a grand gathering cooridinator and all the other perks, you have to be staying on Disney property. Check out this site and also ask Disney themselves. http://allearsnet.com/pl/magath.htm

Well I had someother ideas, but I gotta get going. Good luck! Just keep hanging out here and asking questions and Disney is great for asking questions! BTW I would go through Disney versus AAA as a travel agent.

Also another bonus of staying on site is extra magic hours. Check it out. http://allearsnet.com/tp/emhour.htm

We had to make our room reservations 1 year in advance. We had a choice of resorts in each category. The value was $65/night; moderate- $99/night, and the Deluxe that we picked -- the Beach Club, was $199/night. These were the prices two years ago and I know they have increased.

Ours would be fighting before we pulled out of the drive to get to the airport.

Hello! I just wanted to add that when we were there in in January we saw two groups of 30+ people. They appeared to be tourists from South America. They wore matching t-shirts. We were in MK and MGM with them ( different days ). They moved through the parks together and had about 3 head people with flags ( same color as t-shirts ). When they wanted to get everyone in the groups attention, the people with the flags would jump up on a bench/table/retaining wall and wave the flags. It was neat to see them move through the park together, but January is a low volume month. That probably made staying together doable...:scratchin
Anyway, I would love to do it with my family!
Hope you have a great trip!:thumbsup2

Just wanted to give ya'all an update.
Everyone agreed to stay on-site. :-) I think we are going with Pop Century. I made a call to the group reservation dept and they are suppose to call me back today with a rate. They did tell me with a group rate, we are unable to get the dining plan. So I guess I will have to compare a grand gathering package versus a group rate deal. Any opinions???

From what I remember, a GG does not include any meal discounts. There is no package, only a discounted room rate.

I guess I would have to check the differant prices and see how much the differances are. We loved the dining plan!!! We went to sit down restaurants that we never would have and enjoyed eating like king and queens.princess: If you ask my kids and husband they would say having the dining plan was one of the highlights of their trip!!:cloud9:

This is really a helpful thread for me!
(I'm new to these boards)
My dh's parents are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year and we are planning WDW for early December with our family of 5, dh's parents, and his siblings and their families. We will be a group of 15. (I know, not a huge group)
I'm finding it stressful because I just don't know how this whole family is going to agree on things (and i'm big into planning and want to plan it all right now but dh and i seem to be in some huge rush to plan compared to the rest of the family who aren't into deciding anything right away...)

anyhow, i have really enjoyed reading about others experiences on doing this as a family group!
:goodvibes

I love reading about large family trips.:grouphug: My mom has a huge family(6sisters and 4 brothers). Since we all get along great, I've been trying for years to plan a huge trip to WDW. Sadly, it has worked out yet.

Any ideas how to celebrate an anniversary???

How about sending them to Victoria and Alberts?

Just wanted to give ya'all an update.

I'd go with the dining plan. Do you all have AAA? If so, you can use them to book. You'll get a discount on the room (10%-15% for Pop) then add on dining.

My son and I used the dining plan when it first came out in 2005. It was awesome. I don't think we'll be able to go back without it.

We went in January 14 of us.

The best meal we had was a the land in Epcot.
They have a food court. The food was fresh, healthy and a HUGE variety. I think everyone thought it the best choice especially for the $$.

I haven't read all the replies, but I just wanted to say how incredibly jealous I am. My dream would be to have my entire immediate family (mom, dad, myself and siblings and their spouses and all the kids) go to Disney together, but my dad HATES touristy type places and some of my siblings are too cheap, so it will never happen. But I think the offsite house/condo rental sounds like a good idea to keep costs down, not only for lodging but for food as well. Oh, it just sounds like so much fun-----will you adopt me?? :teeth:

We went 2 summers ago with a group from my family about 20 people.
I did alot of planning and it went very smooth. Now we are planning a trip with my husbands family and my family for this June. Again lots of planning. I have been sending out newsletters every month to keep everyone excited. Last time we went we did purchase matching shirts for everyday. I worked great especially for the kids. I'm not so sure my 16 year old will think it cute now so I dont think we will do it again. My favorite part of bringing a large group is meeting for breakfast early in the morning. I love to sit and talk about the updcoming events of the day.

In the large family that I come from, if we did that we would never make it to the parks!:rotfl2: We would have to plan that for the evening and expect to sit back and relax.:upsidedow We get together at least twice a month just for birthday parties(and thats only the kids! )we do a lot of sitting around and talking!! I wouldn't be able to handle paying all that money for disney and just sit around and talk.:sad2: I know you are probably not saying you would, but in our family just getting 35 people all ready and trying to meet for breakfast would take the first 2 to 3 hours and then if we met for breakfast and enjoyed ourselves talking....well we would be there until noon!!!:sad2:

I know what you are saying. I don't think meeting for breakfast will work for our group. Some people work nights and their bodies are on different schedules. I'm sure some will want to sleep in. I am thinking we can meet for lunch or even dinner.

Group sales called me back today. I don't think we;ll be going that route. The room was going to save us $5 a night (whoppee) and the tickets would save us about $20 for an adult 7 day pass. AND we can't buy the dining plan with that fantastic group rate. Go figure!

I think buying a package with the dining plan would save us more money than that. But I'll let the family decide after the next newsletter goes out.

So mommyofthreeboys what are the dates in June that you are going to be at Disney World ?

As for the night shift workers..that is my husband. We are leaving for Disney in the middle of the week so that he will have time to adjust his sleeping pattern before vacation starts. No one wants to spend any amount of time at Disney dead on their feet because their body is telling them they should still be in bed.

Good luck getting everything planned !!! We are only a party of 7 and can't seem to get it together..LOL

I don't have any advice - just wanted to say, have a great time and enjoy each other - it's easy to get frustrated with so many people - especially since you're the planner, but how fortunate you are all to be able to do that. My family - 18 of us - finally did a group vacation in January - awesome memories that we will always treasure. Have a blast!

I'm planning a trip for our family of 14 for next Feb. Yesterday I opened my latest addition of Family Fun magazine and there was a section on group/family travel. They listed triphub.com as a great organizational tool to plan and keep everyone in touch. I set it up quickly, last night, and found it to be very easy to navigate and use. I'm sure many of you will find it helpful in planning your trips as well. Happy planning!
