I warned everyone a couple weeks ago, we are traveling for Christmas, bad weather is on the way. They are saying this storm has all the characteristics of the storm that just hit the east coast, upwards of 2 feet of snow possible in some areas.

Now the dilemma=do we pull the kids out of school tomorrow??? I know they all have some tests so they would have to do those today if they can--hopefully the bad weather just holds off.

Iowa sounds like it is going to get hit the worst--hopefully the western IA folks can keep us updated on current conditions :thumbsup2.

The way the storm looks we either get out early Wednesday or don't get to go anywhere until Sunday at least :sad1:

You kids in high school with finals that are a significant part of their grade. I would not even consider taking my kids out but that is just me.

You cannot help the weather. It is going to be harrowing. And maybe you will get lucky. Can you leave as soon as finals are over?

I will bet your sister doesn't show at all.:lmao:

They aren't finals, just regular chapter tests/quizes.

As for my sister, she will show, mainly because she wasn't planning on getting there until Sunday anyway :lmao:. They are already in Wisconsin for her DH's family celebration so they won't have to worry about traveling.

Some good friends are supposed to fly to DC on Christmas Day. We told them if they wanted to come up early they could stay here, even if we are not home. They have a 3 hour drive from their house to the airport and it is only 15 minutes from our house so even in bad weather they could still get there.

Man, I'm praying for all of us that have to travel the next couple days.

My son in law has an overnight training work flight tonight and can't start driving from Rapid City till tomorrow. All of SD is forecasted for winter storm warning already.

The southern part of MN forecast looks no better. I think we're going to see a blizzard warning posted for all of southern MN later today.

This is my grandson's first Christmas so son in law wants to get here, but I hope he waits.

We are supposed to travel to New Brighton on friday as well.

herc.

The snow doesn't bother me as much as the freezing rain predicted around the MN/IA border. That and we haven't had a really, really big snowfall in YEARS and we might not be home to enjoy that :lmao:.

Oh no! I am flying from Florida to Omaha, Nebraska on Christmas Day...am I going to make it?!

We've already contacted everyone that's coming to our house on Christmas Day (all 30 of them) to plan on Saturday as a possible back up in case of weather...and we'll make the call late on Christmas Eve or early Christmas morning.

The farthest (furthest??) away people are coming from is 3 hours on a good day, so that could turn into an all day drive in bad weather. :sad2:

I have a feeling we won't be going to church on Christmas Eve, either (4pm service). So that means Santa won't come until we go to sleep, which totally messes up our tradition of Santa coming while we are out looking at lights after church. :headache:

I hope everyone stays safe and if bad weather means staying at home with just your family (snug and safe), do it. :santa:

I would keep a close eye on your flight-it is very possible that it won't happen-or will be significantly delayed. They are talking about white out conditions on Christmas day around Omaha.

golfgal,

If you're coming down 35W into Iowa, highway patrol frequently closes the section from Owatonna to the Iowa border during big storms. The wind can really whip in that area. check first.

herc.

E-mail the school and see if they mind. Not asking permission, per se, but notifying them of your dilemma.

I would seriously consider it if it were my kids.

And if the quarter overlaps the break and doesn't end until January, that would make the decision easier for me.

If the quarter were ending now, they would have no way to make up their tests.

One of those situations where I am of the opinion that family comes first.

I know, that is what we are afraid of. We actually found that going down 52 and through Stewartville is faster than going 35 but they will close that road too. I really want to just leave tonight but DH is interviewing for a new job tomorrow so he can't miss that-but he will be done with that around noon. I think we will just plan on leaving whenever he gets back from that providing the weather is still ok. The kids found out they are having a pep fest for the last hour of school. We will just have the kids go in early tomorrow and take whatever test they would have for 6th/7th hour so we could then leave by 12:30 if necessary. I just sent them a text to make arrangements so we can leave by noon tomorrow.

I just watched the weather and we are suppose to start having rain by Thursday afternoon into Friday. Wierd weather. My dd is flying out at 7:00 a.m.Thursday morning out of O'Hare and I hope, it will be rain by then, she has a connecting flight at LAX to Japan, with only a 1 1/2 hour layover. I told her to book a straight flight, but who knows.

Way to go golfgal, you jinxed the midwest.:rotfl:

We are on a trimester system so second trimester just started a couple weeks ago. The tests they have are just your basic chapter tests/quizzes. The trimester doesn't end until the 2nd week in March so we have a long way to go. I am more concerned about not taking the test now and having 2 weeks to forget everything on the test :lmao:. I sent them a text to check with their teachers. They asked their teachers about this on Friday and they were ok with it then so I don't think it will be an issue. I am hoping they just call off school tomorrow but I know that won't happen. :lmao:

Sorry :guilty::blush:

Some friends from our old town just emailed and asked if we were going somewhere for Christmas because of the bad weather coming in--they know our luck :lmao::lmao:

Well good luck to them and good luck for DH's interview and hopefully you will scoot out in the nick of time.

As Golfgal knows, I detest MN winters, BUT, this time I hope it snows. Sad, but true. I am supposed to go to Windom on Friday, 3 hours down, 3 hours back, all in one day. To visit family, I really don't like. So if it gets as nasty as they say it might, it is my excuse to stay home and spend the day with just dh and the kids!!!!!!!!!!!

"cause Windom is such a rockin' town, ya know :lmao:.

I don't blame you one bit--3 hours round trip is just far enough on one day that it is miserable. From what they are saying, you aren't going on Friday :thumbsup2.

Yep, Windom, barrel of fun!!!!!!!!!!! I don't know how young people grow up there, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Sadly, 6 hours in the car is better than the alternative of staying overnight with them!

I'm crossing my fingers.
