Don't quite understand the "transfer" part of rent/transfer

Hi

We're DVC members new to this site. I am having trouble understanding why it states under Points for Transfer: "DVC rules prohibit the transfer of points in exchange for any type of compensation." Is transferring points for people who want to give their points away? Doesn't make sense to me. Can anyone help?

:welcome: Yes, I believe for all purposes, they do not want us getting money from someone for our points. I have never needed to transfer my points to anyone so I've never been overly concerned about it. This question will be better answered on the DVC forums. Any DVC questions will get the best responses on those forums.

I am going to move this to our DVC Boards. They are the best place to get answers to any DVC Questions.

Officially, DVC Rules state that points for transfer can not be for compensation. However, it is not a practical rule (IMO), and transferring for cash happens all the time, and in fact, DVC does this as well with the the new "one time purchase" points for $15 per point.

DVC policy prohibits an exchange of money for points when transfered. However, everyone does it all the time--they simply keep that piece quiet when calling Disney to complete the transfer.

And, if you had an issue, then DVC won't get involved as once a transfer happens, the points are gone. It really takes a matter of trust between members and there are several ways that people do things.

I have never done it myself, but if I do, my hope would be to find someone who agrees to 50% pay upfront, and the other 50% when the transfer happens.

So--all this transferring is "frowned upon?" Then I hope OP can find someone who has actually done it to get a better understanding of how it works (and me too). I thought from reading other threads that the owner calls and transfers points to the buyers account. Money would be handled independently of DVC, i.e., paypal, etc.

The points show in your DVC account pretty quickly. If they've not been banked, they can be according to the original owner's use year. So someone could collect/"transfer" points from several owners to create a pool and maybe even bank them for the "big trip" and then not have to borrow (or borrow as much) from themselves.

Am I missing something?

We might have to transfer either here or with the new deal for a trip I want next summer.

Transferring isn't the issue. There just isn't suppose to be any money involved....in theory.

You are only allowed one transfer per UY, per membership. That would prevent anyone from getting multiple transfers from many people.

What some people do (and I am contemplating it myself) is to secure one larger transfer one year and using banking of my own points to effectively cover several years of needing smaller amounts.

For example, if I was, say, 25 points shy, for the next four years, I would simply seek a 100 point transfer today, and that would cover my shortfall until 5 years from now.

Yes, I forgot it was one time per member UY.

I like their theory that no money is involved....That's why they're charging $15 a point for a theoretical transfer.....:rolleyes1

My post was moved to the DVC boards, but I'm not quite sure where that is and what the difference between the disboards and dvc boards is. I found **************** -- are those considered the dvc boards? I noticed that points for rent are listed there as well as the disboards -- again what's the difference between the two?

Sorry about all the questions, I'm just trying to figure this whole thing out as I have some points I'd like to put up for rent.

Thanks, everyone! You've all been very kind in leading me through this!

This thread is now in the DVC board (forum) of the Disboards website. You're there!

The DISboards is a collection of Disney-related discussion boards on subjects such as Disney dining, Disney resorts, DVC ownership, Disney Transportation, Disney Theme Parks, etc. It is arranged as a hierarchy so if you go to www.disboards.com you will be at the top of that hierarchy. At that level you will see the list of the boards, starting with:

Welcome to the DIS
The DIS Unplugged Podcast
Theme Parks Attractions and Strategies
Disney Resorts
Disney Restaurants
Orlando Hotels and Attractions
--- (many more here but you get the idea...)

You will recognize "Welcome to the DIS" -- that is where you originally posted your thread. If you scroll down the page of board listings you will eventually see the DISboards' DVC boards, one of which is DVC-Operations which is where this thread is now located:

Disney Vacation Club
DVC-Operations
DVC-Planning
DVC-Mousecellaneous
DVC-Rent/Trade
DVC - Resort Reservation Availability

You can post questions about how renting works here on the DVC-Operations board but when you are ready to rent your points you can only do so on the DVC-Rent/Trade board.

The other discussion forum you mentioned (the one that got *****'d out) is a completely different website and not part of the DISboards.
