Don't forget to tip your waitstaff at non Disney restaurants!

I just got back from my free DDP trip. While I was there I remembered a thread about non Disney servers being stiffed on the tip so I talked to a waitress at Raglan Road about it. She told me that the non Disney servers recieve about $3.00 per TS credit used. She didn't seem to be upset about the amount of the tip but I know I was. On our bill that was about $125.00 our server would have recived a 7.2% tip. That's totally unacceptable to me so I tossed in an extra $30.00 bringing the tip up to about 30%. Considering how nice she was, how good the srvice was and that we lingered at the table enjoying the show I felt the 30% was much better then stiffing her with 7%.

So please remember to kick in abit extra for your non Disney waitstaff. They work hard and deserve a better tip then $3.00 per person.

Is this just during the free dining? We went to RR in May and the receipt clearly showed 18% tip.

I've got no problem with tipping. I tip in excess of 20% for standard service - more for excellant service. I don't use the DDP because DDE works better for us, but if I did I would probably tip a bit extra.

However, all that being said, there is something unethical about selling a dining plan with tax and tip included and then not giving the wait staff appropriate tips. It is not the DDP patron that is "stiffing" the wait staff, it is Disney itself. The DDP patrons should not be expected to fix Disney's mistake.

Is there a thread anywhere that is a comprehensive list of the non-Disney restaurants? Knowing this, I definitely will want to tip some more for good service.

So are you saying that the bill shows an !8% tip being included but the waitperson does not get the 18%? I am sorry but that is wrong. The establishment is not doing right by their waitstaff. It should not be up to the customer to make up the difference.

True. At Raglan Road and Les Chefs de France we just recieved a bill with a zero amount on it. No breakdown showing prices or tips. I'm pretty sure if you get a bill showing that full 18% then you're probably at a Disney owned restaurant. But at the non Disney owned ones it won't show amounts.

I've heard this was the normal way it was done and not just happening during the free DDP.

The non Disney owned restaurants don't normally give customers a bill that shows the total menu price of the meal.

Interesting that they do not provide an itemized bill so you can confirm that you were charged for only what you ordered. We do not have any plans to eat at non-Disney table service places on our upcoming trip but I just find it to be a shady practice.

I think what the OP is trying to say is out of a 1 TS credit she receives about 3 dollars. what he doesnt say is she prob has to tip bartender busstaff runner,prob taxes that are taken out also. so if the tip is 18% i would say 8 to 9 percent go to the other waitstaff leaving her with 9 to 10 % tip. Even if the the patron wasnt on the dining plan leaving an 18% tip she would receive the same amount as long as she payed her taxes on her tips

I suspect the server that the OP had was misinformed. I heard that there was some dispute between the non-Disney restaurants and Disney about the '07 DP and one of those issues was specifically the % of gratuity. It is quite possible that the staff at RR are discussing these issues and the server mis-interpreted it. Gratuity of 18% *is* included.

OP, you tipped 23% + 18% (included) so you tipped a total of 41%. That is your perogative of course but I think it's wrong that you were given false information. I'm tempted to call Raglan Road and ask them about this.

Now, it has been a long time, but when I was a waitress, the practice where I worked was to claim 8% of your sales before taxes as your tip income. At the time, 15% was the norm; currently it seems to be 18 – 20 %. So, as I usually did get around 15% of my net sales, I was taking home 7% of my tips “tax-free.” Not a bad deal. My actual hourly wage was two something an hour, so it and the claimed tips kept me a lower income tax bracket and eligible for credits and such.

Any current servers that can verify the current tip claiming practices? Or someone that works in one on the indicated restaurants that can verify that they are not receiving their tip?

I don't think anyone should feel guilty about not tipping more if you are on the dining plan. I mean 18 percent is added to the bill, but if you get a server who goes way and above it would be nice to slip her a 5.00 or something.You have to at LEAST claim 8 percent of your sales for the day. Even if you don't received 8 percent in tips on the dollar amount you sell. Which never happens because usually good tippers take care of the bad tippers or stiffers. I can't tell you how many times people come in and their bill is 40.00 and they leave 2.00 that is a bunch of crap if you can't afford to tip right when you have gotten excellent service then cook breakfast at home. Sorry if I offend anyone but we work VERY hard for our tips and there are still lots of people out there that believe its 1950 by the tipping standards. I work at a local breakfast chain and I make 2.13 a hour plus tips, but I don't see a paycheck it all goes to the taxes. So what tips I make is what I count on each day.

I can comment on the current tip claiming practices, but not on gratuity in a non-disney owned restaurant. I work in a Disney owned establishment.

It's almost impossible for a server in my establishment to not claim the lions share of their tips. Disney tracks (and claims for you) your credit and gratuity tips. These are at least 90% of our sales on a given night. I only take cash payment for guest checks once in blue moon. Most people charge it in one way or another. At the end of the night, the computer tells you what your charge tips, your gratuity tips, and your cash sales are. You are then asked to input your cash tips. Yes, you could theoretically lie here, but it's not going to be a significant amount anyway. I can't even recall the last shift that I had where I had my hands on cash.
