Donating Points

Hey everyone!
We have a situation where a close friend has been diagnosed with stage 4 adrenal gland cancer. We will be having a benefit for him in January. There will be a silent auction at the benefit. My husband and I had discussed perhaps auctioning off some of our points. Not sure how many yet, as we only have 200, but maybe enough for a weekend? And at that point, do we say it's for Hilton Head or Vero instead of offering all of the resorts?
I'm really not sure if this is possible with all of the restrictions that would be on the reservation. Or perhaps I'm making too much of this and you guys may have a very simple solution of how I could make this work? Let me know!

My advice is to auction off a specific reservation with a note that dates may be changed subject to availability. I'd add a note that excludes holiday weeks or any dates for which point costs would exceed what you are willing to spend. Make sure that the bidders know this only covers the room - not tickets, transportation , etc (unless you are also providing that). I'd offer something at WDW that you book at the 7 month window, since it sounds like you have VB and/or HHI points. I think more bidders would be interested in WDW than the beach resorts.

For example, you could auction off 2 nights in a studio villa at BCV for June 10 - June 12, 2011. Make the actual reservation (in your name.. you can change it later) before the auction and allow yourself enough time to cancel it (or change it) if the winner wants different dates and there is availability.

Go ahead and book a reservation under your name. Then auction it off. This way you have a specific date/location included at the auction. Then call MS and change the name on the reservation to the winner.
