No problems but...when we got to the counter on the lower level to check-in for our vehicle, the attendant tried to get us to upgrade from the mid-sized we had reserved to a minivan. We had already decided that what we were paying for a midsize was plenty enough so we declined the offer.

Very glad we didn't bite. When we went to the garage the row marked midsized was filled with minivans, small size SUV's, and full sized vehicles. We could take our pick. It was a nice surprise but boy I would have been ticked had we paid the extra for the minivan.

I'm not saying this surprise will happen for anyone else, but it might be worthwhile asking what is actually on the lot before agreeing to pay any extra for an upgrade.

It's common practice for counter staff to attempt to up-sell - they're not only encouraged to do that but requiredby most rental companies.

Good for you that you stood your ground, especially when they make it sound so inexpensive to upgrade. Way too many people go for the pitch.

I thought that with Dollar they assigned you a car at check in. Only Alamo and National allow you to choose your car from a mid size row.

They didn't specify one particuliar vehicle...just that it would be midsize and gave a couple of examples of what the possiblities could be. We just went down the row marked midsize and checked with the lot attendant to make sure we could indeed take one of the vehicles in that marked section.

Dollar has changed things up at MCO. If you rent from them you should expect an entirely different check/pick-up experience.

Hi Dick;

Can you please elaborate in what ways has Dollar changed things up at MCO? Is the 'new' renting experience better or worse?

Thanks, Mithuri

I just rented from MCO dollar last week, and wanted to confirm that they just give you your paperwork and tell you to pick your car from the appropriate aisle. There are also attendants in the garage to assist you if necessary. Then you drive out, stop at attendant at the gate, give your paperwork and off you go. It was all very easy, as was the check-in!

For regular renters you'll go to the reservation desk in the airport just like you have before, get your paperwork and go over to the garage where you'll pick up your vehicle from a designated row, or rows. Then you'll proceed to a check out booth where you'll hand over your paperwork, have your selection verified and be on your way.

For Dollar Express customers you just go over to the Dollar Express booth in the garage (no longer having to first stop at the reservation desk in the airport) and pick up the keys for your designated vehicle (ours was a brand new Chevy Malibu to satisfy our midsize rental - a much nicer car than we've generally expected in the past from Dollar). The Dollar Express vehicles are in the first row right next to the booth. Then drive out to the booth for check-out. Our experience last week was that the Dollar Express process - from going to the DE booth to getting checked out - took about five minutes including stowing our luggage in the trunk and checking the car for dents and scratches.
