So, I thought I was getting a pretty good deal on a rental for 129.99, then I went to make the reservation and BAM!! Extra charges??!! Now all the sudden my 129.99 is 168.41!

I have to be able to get a better deal then this don't I?

Weekly Rate $129.99 per week (x1 Week)
with unlimited mileage

Base Rate $129.99

Taxes, Surcharges And Fees
STATE TRANSACT TAX $12.30
VEHICLE LICENSE FEE $2.82
APT CONC RECOV FEE $13.02
STATE TAX $10.28

Total Estimated Charges $168.41

Your base rate before fees and taxes is $129. Those the standard fees for a weekly rental at MCO. Your base rate is pretty low, so you're getting off cheap.

Some airports in Fl and other parts of the US have even higher fees and taxes.

herc.

Every rental car company charges these fees. Just be grateful you didn't get charge a Frequent Flyer fee (usually 50 cents a day or $2 max) just to give you a few airline miles for the car rental.

All the fees you quoted are local and state TAXES. The rental car company doesn't see a dime. 30% in total taxes are normal in most big and medium cities.

Eeyore1954,

Just curious, why shouldn't we pay $2 for the air miles? not worth the money??

The reason I asked is that I used credit card air mail for this trip and the last trip to WDW. The air mail does not tie to a particular airline, and no particular blackout date, but then when I do the calculation, it is not really a good deal because it takes $15 for one air mail, the ticket is calculated based on the distance between two places, say it requires over 1700 air mail for me to get a ticket WDW and significantly higher if I were to go to CA.
Therefore I thought it would be easier (faster) for me to accumlate air mail if I were to go for one particular airline, say using that airline's credit card, use the communication and rental partners for this airline. Hence, I am considering to pay the $2.
If I do not pay the $2, how can I make sure my air mail get logged to my FF.

fac,
I am not sure what you mean by "air mail"?

However, the rental car companies will charge you 50 cents a day if you request frequent flyer mileage credit. So I give Hertz my Delta number, I get a few miles and a charge of 50 cents a day.

Where this is a rip off is that I get the exact same number of mile regardless of if my rental is one day or 4 days! So why do they charge me daily? Plus in most cases the mile credit for renting a car is pretty small.

If you don't pay the fee... you won't get the credit in your FF account.

carolA,

Thank you.
I meant "air mile" :-), the credit card I used is from citibank and it does not tie to any particular airline, therefore I can just call them when I have enough air mile to fly to a particular city.

Now that I try to build up my continental FF, hence I plan to pay hertz $2 for the 500 mile credit. But doing the arithmetic just now, it does not really worth that much though.
Say we need 35000 for an air ticket, but in this case, I pay $2 (plus the price to rent the car) to get 500 mile credit, using the same logic, I would have to pay 140 for the 35000 mile (hence a "free" ticket).
