The designers of the handicapped rooms at POR should be praised for their insight into what a HC person really needs.
I have been promised at other Disney Mod & Value resorts a HC room - but something has always been missing. Everything at POR was perfect. We were in Alligator Bayou building #16.
1 - The doorways (which previously were slanted) were brought out flat to add precious wheelchair/ECV space upon entry to the room.
2 - All furniture opened easily - from the ECV. That is unusually good.
3 - The toilet was a raised toilet - with bars - not just a low toilet with a grab bar that might not work for a bad spine.
4 - The roll-in shower really was actually a roll-in shower, not a tub. It also had bars as well as a hand-held shower, with an additional high shower for non-handicapped.
5 - The air conditioner was cleverly covered to look like a piece of furniture. It now works from the wall. It feels like central air, even in the bathroom.
6 - The bathroom sink is at a perfect level. Low enough for HC, high enough for others.
7 - The stairway closest to the parking lot has been ramped for easy access.
8 - There were two beds in the room, not just the one king only concept.
I believe that someone at WDW was listening to people when we expressed what we wanted in a handicapped room.
And - the staff throughout the resort are unbeatable when it comes to helping you out with anything you could possibly need. They were pleasant as well as helpful.
Congratulations to POR for getting it right!
