The designers of the handicapped rooms at POR should be praised for their insight into what a HC person really needs.

I have been promised at other Disney Mod & Value resorts a HC room - but something has always been missing. Everything at POR was perfect. We were in Alligator Bayou building #16.

1 - The doorways (which previously were slanted) were brought out flat to add precious wheelchair/ECV space upon entry to the room.
2 - All furniture opened easily - from the ECV. That is unusually good.
3 - The toilet was a raised toilet - with bars - not just a low toilet with a grab bar that might not work for a bad spine.
4 - The roll-in shower really was actually a roll-in shower, not a tub. It also had bars as well as a hand-held shower, with an additional high shower for non-handicapped.
5 - The air conditioner was cleverly covered to look like a piece of furniture. It now works from the wall. It feels like central air, even in the bathroom.
6 - The bathroom sink is at a perfect level. Low enough for HC, high enough for others.
7 - The stairway closest to the parking lot has been ramped for easy access.
8 - There were two beds in the room, not just the one king only concept.

I believe that someone at WDW was listening to people when we expressed what we wanted in a handicapped room.

And - the staff throughout the resort are unbeatable when it comes to helping you out with anything you could possibly need. They were pleasant as well as helpful.

Congratulations to POR for getting it right! :thumbsup2

Do you know if that's the only style of accessible room that they have? The high toilet would not work for my mom, but she'd need a shower, not a tub.

Did the squared off entry still leave enough space outside to manuever an ECV, or was it a bit tight?

1 - I don't know about a lower toilet, but the higher one is only about 1 1/2 or 2 inches higher than the regular one. My daughter didn't even notice
until I pointed it out to her.

2 - The outside space was plenty for my ECV to enter the room.

The doorway being flat was actually easier, because it didn't matter which direction you approached the room from. It was equally as easy whether coming from the left or right outdoors.

POR was really comfortable. The people working there are soooo nice!

Enjoy your trip! :goodvibes

Was this in the Alligator Bayou area or the Mansions?

Oops NM, I see it was building 16 in AB.

Thanks

Thanks for the answers - good to know the doorway makes both directions accessible.

1 1/2 - 2 inches higher on a toilet though makes it too painful for my mom to use it. Hmm, this is going to be tricky.

The actual standard height for accessible toilets is 17 to 19 inches from floo to top of the toilet seat.

'Regular' toilets can be anywhere from 14 to 16 inches high.

Accessible rooms with raised seat toilets are available as both fully accessible rooms with roll in showers and accessible rooms with tubs that have grab bats.

Many resorts have added grab bars to the tub/shower combination of all their first floor rooms. This makes a good option for people who need the grab bars, but do not need/want the raised seat toilet. We were actually in a hotel this weekend where our 2nd floor, non- accessible room had grab bars in the tub/shower combination.

You can also request a handheld shower to be installed and request a tub bench (but, I would suggest checking the bench before use because the one time we did get one from Housekeeping, the screws needed tightening badly).
