My lab needs to lose weight. When we rescued her she was a little chunky and we "loved" her up a few more pounds with too many treats. She is on a weight management food but I am also interested in the green bean diet I've read about. I can't find any specific instructions anywhere so I'm curious how it's done. Any advice??

We have had our mutts on the green bean diet. We would generally 1/2 the amount of dry food and replace it with drained canned green beans. When Katie was on it (shepherd/lab mix) she was given a whole can 15 oz green beans.

We've got our fat lab on the diet food. 3/4 c in the morning and 3/4 c at night. We give him frozen green beans throughout the day for a snack. A little warning though...dogs and green beans make extra smelly poofs of air throughout the day, if you know what I mean. :rotfl2:

Thanks for the help! That sounds like a great idea though I'm not looking forward to the puffs of air :faint:

My sister had her Golden Ret. on this and it really worked. Her vet also told her she could give him raw carrots as treats so she bought the bags of little ones and he liked them a lot. It is amazing how well it worked.

I know he got a whole can, she would buy them at Aldi's.

I have a shep/lab mix and I can tell you there is NO WAY he would eat green beans!! He would spit them out. He thinks he is a person and a fussy one at that. IF we toss him something healthful he will catch it and then just open his mouth and let it drop out!! This is JUST like my SON!! The only way I could get him to do it would be to put roast beef gravy on them and this would defeat the purpose. :rotfl: :rotfl:

The correct term for that would be "Labragas" And let me tell you ther are no words to describe that!!!! :scared:  :faint:

Thankfully Katie liked green beans. However she would spit out cheap sliced cheese. It had to be Kraft Deluxe Singles or she wouldn't eat it. :rotfl:

Our vet suggested carrots but of course she doesn't like carrots  Her skinny brother on the other hand :teeth: loves them. She does like green beans though thankfully. :)

Chloe is on it right now.

She was getting two cups of kibble a day. Now, she gets a half cup of kibble and a half can of green beans, twice a day. A whole can of green beans is only 40 calories and they're a great filler.

She's been on it about three weeks now and I can tell a difference! She looks great! :thumbsup2

(Make sure you buy the no sodium/no sugar type)

I guess I've lucked out, because Chloe is gas-free. :teeth:

I have a gassy assy and a chocolate pootie maker, and if anyone knows how to curb this (stinky) behavior I would be forever in your debt!!

We have our Golden on green beans too. He loves them. I also add in canned pumpkin with his kibble and a little water. It's another great filler and very low in calories.

Luckily our dog loves all veggies, unlike my kids, and he loves fresh fruit to. As soon as the cutting board comes out he is there waiting for me to drop something! :rotfl2:

Good luck!

Chloe too! The real shocker is that lettuce is her favorite! She will come running from the other side of the house if she smells it. And she LOVES bell pepper, but I only give her tiny bits of it (when I'm chopping), because it's in the nightshade family.

Yesterday she got a few goodies that she wasn't supposed to have - both diet-wise and health-wise. I was making potato salad and was chopping potatos (duh!) and yellow onion. My hand slipped and about five chunks went flying off of the counter, along with a rather large chunk of onion. I figured she'd scarf down the potato and spit out the onion, but she ate every bit of it. Yuck.

Chloe has a stomach of steel. Literally at one point, when she swallowed a Carmex lid.

I'm sitting here trying to figure out which kind of dog the former is. I think a chocolate lab is the other one...

Anyone wanna see a cute puppy? Some moron tied up a pregnant Golden at a shelter and our rescue - well, rescued her, and no more than 30 minutes later, she gave birth to six puppies. Can you guess what their dad was?

Anyone interested, PM me for the link. I'm dying for one!

Simon loves lettuce. I was making a salad for lunch tomorrow and he was sitting there begging for bites of lettuce. The pup in your last post is so cute. DH and I both agree it is a good thing we live in Florida and not Texas. Or we would want to bring one home.
