Dog Park

Across the street from Loop 500 and adjacent to Loop 300. Fenced, slightly rolling hills. Maybe an acre or so enclosed.

yup, that is pretty much it. the fence is probably about 4' high and there is water and waste bags. oh and one picnic table in there for you. oh and almost forgot there is a tree, too. anything else you would like to know. :)

Depends on your definition of close. Probably close to a mile away. Kennels are at the front of the campground....dog park is deep within campground.....probably a little more than halfway from the kennel to the marina.

You can find some good pics on AllEars HERE

The dog park isn't really close to the kennels at all. See map HERE. Kennels are at the front of the Fort (bottom right of map) and dog park is across from 500 loop, adjacent to 300. It would be a heck of a walk - and dogs aren't allowed on buses. There is no place to park a car near the dog park, but there is golf cart parking nearby and leashed dogs are allowed on carts (except in areas posted as "no pets" like the pool, Meadows, marina/Settlement, playgrounds, comfort stations...)

You can see the sign posting the dog park rules HERE.

There are double locking gates leading in, several places for water. If the watering troughs are warm, just splash out what's in there and they'll refill with fresh water.

Plenty of space to throw a ball or frisbee. Mostly flat except for the hill running across the middle (which IIRC is actually the old railroad bed). One area with some shade, but majority is in the sun. Nice grassy surface, benches and a couple of picnic tables.

Do you need to show updated rabies records, or specific shot records to camp at fort wilderness with pets?
Are they required for staying at the kennel?

i have never been asked to show them. but, i always keep a copy of their vet records in the rv with us. rabies and distemper is normally what would be required.

You need proof of shots for the kennels but only once in all our trips into FWCG have we been asked at the checkin. You are required to sign a form confiming their shots are up to date (sometimes) when checking in. It really is hit and miss!

We always travel with our two furry girls and have never been asked, although I always keep it in the RV just in case.

Ditto. Good to have them with you in case anything ever happened or you found yourself in a position where you had to kennel them (vax records are required for the kennel).

Just got back. Had my papers/records, but were never asked. Did not kennel my dog. The dog park is awesome. Not only did my pup get to run and play with a large variety of dif't dogs, but I spent some time talking with some nice "Disney fans" as well. Time well spent.

One word of warning - treat the FW dog park like you would any other and be aware of the other dogs and their owners. 99% of the ones we met in our 3 weeks there were terrific, but there were a few cases where either the dog was not very well behaved or nowhere near social enough to be in a dog park setting, or the owner was clueless and/or not paying attention. We got in the habit of waiting a few minutes before going in, just so we could observe the dogs already inside.

The one downside to the dog park is that there aren't separate areas for big/small dogs. We always tried to keep our spastic border collies playing away from the little dogs so they didn't get run over. Although Li'l Lyn was like the pied piper for the little terriers, who loved to jump on her whenever she lay down. Luckily she was too focused on the ball to notice.

Sadly the worst experience we had there involved a family who allowed their toddler to race around and try and grab the dogs. Aside from this being a really bad idea in general (especially if they happen upon a dog that doesn't enjoy being fallen on and grabbed at), my dogs race like lunatics after their ball and there was a very real chance this little girl was going to get plowed over. I tried my best to keep my dogs running in the other direction but she kept chasing after them while mom and dad stood chatting obliviously. :headache:

For more on that particular situation, see the thread titled "Playgrounds are for kids, dog parks are for dogs" :rolleyes1

The other reason to carry your papers with you is in the off chance that your dog nips someone or another dog. If you don't have your papers, they will have to go to the doggie 'jail' at Orlando County for the prescribed 2 weeks (or is it 10 days) for observation. Then you have to make travel arrangements to get your dog since you would have probably returned home since.

Anyone ever notice that those "slightly rolling hills" are actually the remains of the old railroad bed?? Anyway, our pups LOVE the park. Great place for them to get some needed exercise and have some doggie fun!

We just got back today from a great 4 day trip. We took our girls to the dog park 3 of the 4 days. It rained hard Thursday night so we did not go on Friday as it was a muddy mess. Saturday was not much better and our Jesse, our Golden who hates water (bathing, lakes, the beach, etc.) apparently has no such problem with mud puddles. She found every single one and crossed through them all multiple times. She is getting older and slower and found a couple doggy friends (a Pom and a Lab/Doodle) to trot with in those puddles. She has arthritis and is not usually up to anything much more than leisurely walking so I was glad she was having a good time. You do have to watch them and others. Cheyenne, our border/aussie mix is good with all dogs except the ones that constantly get in her face all the time. There was one dog there on Thursday that just wouldn't leave her alone no matter how she tried to avoid the other dog. I could tell she was getting tired of the other dog and cut our stay short. You just need to know your dogs and if they have a trigger and watch out for other dogs. We have had mainly good experiences and sometimes there have been 10 or more dogs in the park at once. Sometimes people will say..."My dog doesn't like ______ (fill in the blank)" and I try to make sure my two respect that. Keeps it friendly and fun for all.

The dog park is great other than the fact that when it rains, it gets really muddy at the entrance right inside the fence. We had to skip it a couple of days last week after it had rained on Sunday. I wish I could get our neighborhood association to put one in our subdivision.
