Dog Owners - Give me your experience with shoulder and/or elbow dysplasia

We adopted a beagle puppy from the animal shelter last June. This May he developed a limp on his front leg. We had him checked out at the animal shelter vet clinic and she said she thinks it's either shoulder or elbow dysplasia or a bone chip. Not sure if they are the same thing. She said we would have to have x-rays to tell for sure and it would require surgery to correct it.

Anybody go through this with your dog? Did you have a good outcome after surgery? My poor little guy. I feel so bad for him.
