I was wondering if anyone else gets their dogs taste of the wild? How much do you pay per bag? We have 5 dogs and it is getting pretty expensive at $48 per 30 lb bag but we wouldn't change because you can get better quality for the price.

I used to buy the Merrick brand dog food from Petsupermarket. I also receive their monthly email for 5$ off 25$ or more. The 15lb bag was just around the 25$, sometimes I had to buy a treat or a couple of cans to make the mark.

I loved the quality of the brand, with the coupon I spent the same amount as the cheap Purina brand. It was 5 pounds less, but since it was healthier she didn't need to eat as much, so it lasted almost the same amount of time, one month a bag.

There's a link to the coupon. I never had an issue using more than one coupon on separate transactions, with the same customer card. If you PM me your email address, I can "share the newsletter" with you.

ETA: I guess I should mention the newsletter is for Petsupermarket store, not Merricks food. This is what I get for posting too late at night.

While we don't feed our 6 "Taste of the Wild", I totally understand about not wanting to change brands. We use "Iams" and are happy with. We've used cheaper brands and the poo and the gas made by the dogs? No switching here either. We stay with what works for us.

The best advice I can think of at the moment is to see if that brand has a website. If so, see if they have a newsletter you can sign up for. I did that with Iams and was sent a $5 coupon for signing up.

You could write and compliment their food. Remark how well your dogs do with it and the like. Sometimes, no guarantee, the company will send out "Thank-you" coupons.

Lastly, shop around. There is a store in our town that sells a 20# bag of Iams for $10.95. The next town over, 20 minute drive, sells the same size bag for $17.99. Even if it were reversed I'd drive the 20 min. to save $7.04.

I feed my dog Taste of the Wild too. It's more expensive than other brands I tried, but it's the one brand that she seems to really like and her skin has improved since I started her on it. We have a Pet Supplies Plus store nearby that has the 30lb bags for $38.99. Still pricey, but less than the $48 you are paying. And it's less expensive than some of the other premium brands out there.

After realizing that our dogs were eating better than we were(pheasant and wild rice)we switched them to Kirkland brand lamb and rice. It's well rated,my dogs like it, and it's only $25 a bag!

Another vote for Kirkland Signature Dog Food, but we feed our two boxers the Chicken and Rice formula. Kirkland is very high rated (even higher than other premium brands). I switched from Canidae to the Kirkland about 6 years ago a huge savings!

Another vote for Kirkland. We buy the lamb and rice. It is very high quality and our dog loves it! You can't beat it for the price.

Keep an eye out for % off codes and free shipping codes from petfooddirect.com

My mom has 3 dogs (2 over 100 lbs) and we have 1 dog so she and I buy 5 or 6 bags every 6 weeks or so from PFD when they have codes.

Or if we buy from Petco. They have their buy 10 bags in a year get 1 free if you use your card.

We feed Wellness and they always have $3 or $5 off coupons online. I'm not sure if Taste of the Wild does too.

I totally understand wanting to continue feeding a quality food.

May I ask what criteria you are using to know that it is better quality food?

I once saw a website that claimed to rate dog foods but I've lost the link.

We use Blue Buffalo and it is $48 for a large bag of 24 pounds without coupons. I've usually managed to attract $5 coupons from friends, etc and Petco and Petsmart sale the price to $43. Still too high priced in my opinion....

Does the Kirkland brand come in tiny bites? We have chihuahuas and we've always fed them the smaller chunks, as the larger ones are just too big for them.

Yes! We have a dachshund and they do have a small bites variety. We get the 20lb bag for $11.

This is what we use as well, unless we didn't plan well and run out before the next Costco trip (it is a little far from us), and then we get Beneful. I don't think it is near the quality, but the dogs will eat it.

dogfoodanalysis.com is the website I believe. We use Wellness and it's $54.99 for a 30 lb bag and our labs go thru a bag in less than a month. Since switching from Iams 3 years ago (which is mostly corn filler) our lab hasn't had ear infections, which were costing a lot in vet bills. Wellness had coupons monthly on their website and also Petmart has a sale for $5 off every few months, though lately they haven't been including the large breed in the sale.

Not me, I use whatever brand on sale at grocer's - Purina, PEDIGREE etc. plus a coupon. I pay $2-$3 per week and my dogs have always been very healthy. I only take them to the vet's for rabies and distemper shots and they never been sick. We have large dogs - over 80 lbs and our last two have lived to 14 and 15 which is extremely long for large dogs! My friend who only feed her dogs the expensive stuff had both her dogs die at 11 and they were never as healthy as mine.

You'll be surprised what foods are actually really really bad for your dog (Science Diet, Purina, Iams, Eukanuba (sp?) etc). They are all full of filters and you have to feed your dog more food so even if they are a bit cheaper you end up spending much more on food.

We presently use Earthborn Primative which the dog food review gives 5 stars to. We have been very happy with it. We have a dog who thinks eating is a big waste of time and it was the only food he would think about eating.

I was surprised to see any Wellness as a 6 star on the review site as we had a lot of problems with both our labs on it. One became a walking gas machine on the stuff and the other had diarrhea.

The 6 star wellness is the Core grain free kind. We feed the normal Chicken Wellness and its just 5 stars.

Been there done that, my dog was always getting UTI's. And about 200$ per visit with all the meds.

I went from a 20lb or 25lb bag of Purina to a 15lb bag of Merrick. Less food = less poop. But she still did her favorite thing and wait till we went to the dog park and she was off leash to let it all out. Just so I could chase her across the field looking for it.

I am a pre-vet student so I taken classes on animal nutrition. There is a couple of websites I like http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/ for their info on dog food. I can tell you that our 3 dogs having problems due to the food they were eating (nutro natural, eukanuba) that was before I learn what to look for. After a lot of vet visit and research taste of the wild is really one of the best food out there for the price. I am not sure which type blue food you feed your dogs but I would recommend you do some research because for the price you are paying you can get better quality dog food for you dogs. Blue is not but but not as good as it can be.
