Does this sound like a seizure????

Background info: In Feb my DS had a complex febrile seizure (lasted over 2 hours, 1 1/2 in the ER while he was being pumped with Ativan). His eyes rolled back in his head and he became unresponsive. Fever 101.4

6 weeks later he had his DPT and had a "normal" seizure. He starting making a strange sound and convulsing. We gave him Diastat to stop the seizure (lasted less than 2 mins). Fever 101.5

Today, DS started feeling really warm to me, temp 100.8. I gave him Motrin and then he feel asleep. About 2 hours later he was awake and I was laying with him on the floor. All of the sudden he started shaking, but very lightly--almost like he was shivering. He would not respond to me. This lasted about 30-45 seconds and it was over. For the next couple of mins he just clung to me and then he got down and acted normal. Does this sound like a seizure? I will call both the ped and the neurologist in the morning.

Thanks,
Christy

I'm not a nurse but have a history with seizures in my family and this sounds like it might have been a mild one. Has he been tested for Epilepsy?

Just make sure you write everything down in a journal to keep track of when, how long, what he was doing, etc. when they occur.

Good luck.

It could very well be a seizure. I think you are wise to call your physician in the am, Cristy. I hope your son and <i>you<i> have a good night, tonight.

I'm no doctor or expert....

... but this sounds a lot like a possible petit mal seizure. They're pretty common in children.

Try this link for a good description.

Best of luck to you and your DS.

My DD has epilepsy. It sounds like a seizure to me.

Thanks for the quick replies. Of course this only happens when DH is not here (firefighter--you would think he would have been some help, I think he is in "denial" so he does not feel bad about not being here). We just went to the neurologist last month and they told DS did not need to come back because he was seizure free. I guess all bets are off now.

cart-mom When he was in the hospital they checked for Epilepsy and everything looked fine. They said as long as the seizures are linked to a fever it is probably febrile and not epileptic.

I had no idea seizure could look so different (when he had the first one, I was sure it was a concussion--he fell and hit his head). At the rate we are going, soon I will have seen every type of seizure.

Thanks again for all the input. We still have to try to find the cause of the fever too :(

Just thought of another question - is DS in any type of Daycare or school? Hard to tell from photo how old he is (very cute!).

Scary isn't it? I had a nephew that had seizures too and they never found out why but they eventually stopped. Hang in there.

It sounds like one to me too. Our daughter has had several types of seizures, and one type was after she had a bump on the back of her head at about age 2.5. They were very much like you described, and it was only after we put her back on some antiseizure meds from an earlier operation that they finally stopped. Took about two months on the meds, took her off then she was fine. Good luck with your son.

Christy,

I also think you are wise to contact your DSs neurologist. I had two grand mal seizures in 1995 and from the description I've gotten from DH and DD who was only six yo at the time, it's definitely not a fun thing to witness. I've stayed on Depakote ever since then and have been seizure free.

Good luck and God bless you and your son as you deal with this. Maybe you could have a doc talk to your DH about what is possibly going on with DS. You definitely need his full support through these tough times!!

Please keep us updated when you can.

How scary for you!!!!!!!! It does sound like one to me, too.

My dd had one at age 5 and one at 6 1/2. She is now past nine and hasn't had another one. She was "aware" during her second one, but knew she couldn't control the shaking. After an MRI, cat scan, EEG's her's were diagnosed as rolandic, which means she can outgrow them.

Good Luck !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How scary - I know.

My DS was 15 mos old with a temp of 103.3 and seized in my arms, jerking, eyes rolled back, teeth clenched and stopped breathing and turned blue right in front of me, as I began trying to breath into him, he'd gasp for air and by that time the EMT's took him from me in my living room . Also couldn't be controlled with Ativan in the ER and was unresponsive to my touch as well, just a glazed over look to him.

I was told with febrile seizures, they almost always come out of them by themselves and most are due to high fever when the body temp rises too quickly, like sparkplugs, the brain misfires and causes them. Also that there is a 30% chance they will return before the age of 5 and after that, should be "outgrown" it unless there's another underlying cause. Some kids have a threshold and my son must have reached his.

Any seizure like activity should be concerning and I agree a chart would be a great way to monitor this for your doctor.

((HUGS)) to you and your son.

Thanks again everyone, I am waiting on a call back from the Neurologist, I will post an update when I hear from him.

I will try to answer everyone's question, I am sorry if I miss any.

DS will be 2 in November and does not attend school/daycare. He does go to the nursery at church every Sunday.

I think I made DH sound like a bad person, which he is not. I meant to say when he is at work he feels bad about being gone for so long and feels helpless that he is not here. He knows how scary it is to be here when it happens (the first seizure DH was the one that worked on him in the back of the Ambulance). Sorry if I made my DH sound like he is not supportive, he really is the best (he cooks, cleans, and irons--love him!!)

Lorix2 {{{{hugs}}}} to you as well. I have found a lot of other people whose children have had seizures, but they were all small and they came out of them on their own. You are the only other person I know of that had the awful experience of them having a hard time stopping it in the ER. Is your son 5, I can not wait until Braden turns 5 and I can stop worrying everytime he is sick!

Thanks again, hopefully I will have an update soon!

Christy

christy - you did not make your DH sound anything like that, I think we all fully understood what you mean't.

Yes, my son is 5, will be 6 in November and hasn't had an episode since, but when he gets sick with a fever we watch him like a hawk for this because he always spikes real high.

Remember when he gets sick to keep him dressed comfortably and not too heavily. Cotton is best because it breathes and tepid - not cold - soaks in the tub until the fever starts to come down is better, if it's fever related, this can help prevent them.

I hope this will be a just a distant memory for you soon, although I remember every second and you will too.

(I've had 2 trips to the ER with my son for injuries this week, including last night, so with boys, I've learned that this is just the beginning ;) )

Just talked to the neuro and they said it does sound like a seizure. They still do not want to take any action, since it was so minor and fever related (we told them we would rather not give him meds everyday if he was only going to have seizure every 6 months or so).

Thanks again, this is why I love the DIS. There are so many people here, there is bound to be someone who can relate to almost any problem.

Christy

Lorix2--2 trips to the ER this week, I don't think I can handle having 2 boys!!!

oops! christy sorry I just realized YOU are going to have 2 boys soon. Congrats!
