I know there are many language courses available, and my DD has her eye on learning Japanese. I checked EBay and found Rosetta Stone for a very affordable price.
Does anyone have personal experiences with Rosetta Stone? Is it easy to learn? (I can't imagine anything easy about learning Japanese, but hopefully you get what I mean).

Thanks DIS buddies!

I would like to know too. My DD want;s to learn Spanish

My son uses the homeschool version of Rosetta Stone for German and does very well with it. He is just starting Level 2. He enjoys going to Germany in Epcot to talk German with the cast members!

I was looking into the software and read some reviews on Amazon.com. A lot of complaints were that you could not sell the software when you are done with it because you have a code and it will only work on one computer. So be very careful about buying this on ebay. Check the feedback and make sure they are selling NEW ones.

Also, maybe looking at the reviews on Amazon can help you decide if it is the software for you.

I did not use it personal but know someone who has. I was thinking of getting it and was told that it is just like anything else. you need to put in your time.
If you think buying it, and in a couple weeks your good, not happening.
Does it work, YES
Are your learning a complete language in a few weeks, NO
You will learn stuff but only as fast as the time you put in.
You can learn the basics in a short time, so if going somewhere
can speak enough to get by. Becoming fluent will take many months.
Good point for children is they absorb stuff faster.
If you Google your question on Rosetta Stone, you will find many
people who asked same thing and the replies.
Hope that helps you a bit.

I was looking at some of the cheaper ones available on ebay. I found it odd that their auctions were private so when someone gave good feedback, you cannot see what the item was that they bid on.

Also they claim it is new and sealed, but they don't send the box and the manuals are in .pdf form. Red flag.

Also, buying from ebay you do not have a money back guarantee. I think buying from Rosetta Stone you have a six month (or something) period to see if you like the software.

As Lora said be careful of ebay. The ones that are really cheap, have no box or a download link, It is more than likely pirated software. I have had personal experience buying software on ebay, and found it was illegal copies made by the individual and sold on ebay. I reported the person. But many are still there. Any software can be found on the internet hundreds of places and these people know it, get it and sell on ebay. Buyer beware.

Edit: I should say also , I have bought other software on ebay that was an excellent deal and legitimate.
But it came in a retail box.
