Does Disney hold rooms until certain dates?

Trying to book our trip & I am surprised how many hotels are unavailable, according to the website.

We are wanting to go the first week in December.

Does Disney tend to hold a certain number of rooms & then open them for booking in a few months?

Disney doesn't hold back rooms.

You can check third party sites like Orbitz; they buy up blocks of rooms from Disney and therefore sometimes have availability when Disney doesn't.

Which resorts are you looking for? If you're looking at the DVC (deluxe villa) resorts, the first week of December is one of the two or three peak weeks of the year for those.

The only rooms that get "held" are conference blocks, like the rooms for Pop Warner. Obviously, the teams are not booking yet, but there is a large block held for them by the championships organizers. They will use all of them, but if they didn't they would be released 40-60 days out.

I have encountered a situation at a few times in October when I am assuming rooms were being held as part of block of rooms for a conferences because there was no availability at either Values or Moderates for the longest time - then just a few weeks before we wanted to go rooms were suddenly available at every resort all at one time.

October is prime conference season. There are blocks all over campus for Gartner. There are also a number of sport competitions. It's a traditional way of addressing hurricane season.

Sometimes you are trying to book for too few (or too many) days. For example, I can book June 25 to July 4 at POR and BWI (when I looked last night) garden/standard, but when I try to do just 7 nights (6/25 to 7/2) or 6 nights, only more expensive views are available. I.e., even though the room (whether rack or discount) doesn't mention a minimum stay requirement, it works out to be that way (many hotels do this, fwiw).

Or, maybe just 1 day among your entire stay is unavailable, making it seem that its booked up the entire time.
