I purchased a money order at a bank today. The teller reversed two of the letters on the persons last name (who the money order was made out to).
The teller refused to redo or fix the money order. She said that the person who the money order is made out to will have no problem cashing/depositing the money order.
I mailed it today so it is to late to go back to the bank and recitfy the situation. I did right a note to the person I mailed it to about the situation and to get in touch with me if there is a problem. I kept my copy of the money order.

My ?:
Do I have anything to worry about or should things be ok? This money order is for a deposit on a condo for next Florida vacation and I don't want there to be any problems. I should have asked for a supervisor but was running late to pick up DD at school.

Any advice/information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

I can't offer an answer re the

But I do advise you to go back to the bank and speak with the Manager and tell her what has occurred. I have sent bank money orders and the teller has goofed up a couple of times and promptly redone the MO and cancelled the one with the error. Any bank that has tellers who can't do their job properly or refuse to rectify their errors certainly don't deserve your business!!

Hope it works out for you.... :)

I have completely mis spelled the last name of a person on a money order when I wrote it out when buying a postal money order and I have never had an issue. What bank was this with IMHO if you have asked for it to be changed teh teller should have obliged especially as it was thier mistake.

Thanks for the information/advice. This occured at a TD Canada Trust bank.

I emailed the owner of the condo who we are renting from and told him the situation. If worse comes to worse, I suppose the condo owner can mail it back to me and I can take it back to the bank and have them redo it or issue me a new one. Or if the condo owner cannot cash it, perhaps the bank here can cancel the original one and make up a new one.

The owner of the condo lives in a town of only 20,000 so hopefully he will know someone at the bank and it will be ok.

I have dealt with this bank/branch for almost 30 years and this is the first time there has ever been an error of any sort.

Thanks again for all the input.

As a TD employee I find that irritating that one of our employees was so lazy that they wouldn't fix their own mistake. I would reccomend calling the branch tomorrow and speak to the branch manager. Tell them the situation and that you are not very happy with the service you recieved regarding this issue. At the very least they should refund you the cost of the money order. If you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask.

In reality, the teller probably had to go to someone else, or another area in the branch to get the money order, and she couldn't be bothered doing it again. Maybe there was only one M.O left in the drawer and she would have to wait for somebody to get more, and record the numbers, etc. No doubt about it, it was plain laziness.

It really shouldn't matter what the teller had to do to get another MO. If you were concerned (as obviously you are) she should have obliged your request. If in fact there was an issue - ie there were no more MOs in the drawer and it would have taken awhile, she should have explained the situation and allowed you the choice. I also work at a Bank and it is little things like this that leave a somwhat sour taste in people's mouths and are so easy to fix. I agree that it is worth mentioning to the Manager - even if you e-mail - because likely if this person is providing a meager level of service to you then she is doing the same to others.

I am a branch manager (please don't pick on me for that) with another bank and I would be appalled if one of my staff refused to re-issue a money order.

I would ask to see the supervisor the next time you are in, if that happened to you what else is that person doing to other customers. I would want to know about it.

As far as the mispelling is concerned. It all comes down to how well the the Payee is known to his bank and how careful the other bank is. I would say that 95% of the time a small error like this is no problem, however the other bank could be within their rights to refuse to cash it. Like I said it should be OK.

It is better to get little mistakes of whatever kind, including this one, fixed as soon as you discover them. If you accept the incorrect money order, you would have no recourse (other than a new money order) if it bounced and you were assessed late fees by its recipient.

Feel free to ask for supervisors, etc.

If you receive a check or money order with your name misspelled, the best chance of having it go through is to deposit it into your account using an ATM or a night deposit box. (Never put cash deposits into either of those.)

People have missed airplane flights because names on tickets were misspelled.

I am not sure why you would say not to deposit cash into the ATM or night depository? In either case the cash deposit is verified. As far as I am concerned they are a safe means to deposit cash. Also, just to clarify - I believe the reason for your comment to deposit the MO into the ABM is because not all of those deposits are as closely scrutinized as one deposited through a teller, which is true. I just want to make sure noone interprets your suggestion as depositing the MO the OP originally obtained (payable to someone else now, however misspelt) back into her own account via ABM - NOT a good idea as it could be misconstrued as attempted fraud - to which the Banks are more and more vigilant due to government regulation.

I agree about not putting cash into the ATM's. Although the machines themselves are secure there is no audit trail for cash. The deposit are opened at the bank in joint custody. It is your word against the bank on how much cash you put in the envelope. Bank always wins.
As long as the MO is for the same amount as the ATM deposit there should be no problem.
