My DH wants to really stay @ Poly but I think going from a 2br. villa to 2 queenbeds for our family of 4 is wasteful. We have alot of points to do so, but not sure if it makes sense. Any opinions greatly appreciated!! TIA Brenda

Some do, we did it once at WL years ago for 2 nights. A hotel room for around the price of a 2 BR just doesn't sit well with me. Your choice of course. Personally, I'd just pay OOP for the Poly if I wanted to stay there and if necessary, rent out my points.

We used points a few years ago to stay at the Contemporary before they tore down the North Wing. But they were someone else's points that we got for real cheap.

If you have the points and you don't mind downsizing your space, it's okay to use the points any way you want.

If you have the points, why not?
For us, I just cannot justify the extra points. I would rather try to book at a time when there is a discount on the rooms and pay cash.

I agree, they are your points, use them however you wish. While I would not trade to non-DVC resort on a regular basis, for a one time "I really wanna stay at this hotel" type trip, I would splurge and use them. You bought them to enjoy, after all. If staying at the Poly was always on a "someday" list, go for it.

In this case, I don't think it's a matter of being wasteful or making sense - it's a matter of keeping your DH happy. There's a lot of value in keeping a spouse happy, LOL.

Perhaps a better strategy is to just do it and afterwards, you can initiate a discussion on whether it was worth the points compared to your DVC 2-bedroom. He'll be more amenable to that discussion after he's fulfilled his wish. Sometimes, a person just really, really wants to do something and no value or cost argument is going to change that feeling. If you can afford it, I say just go ahead and do it! :goodvibes

Only a few times, and never at WDW.

Used points at Grand Californian Hotel, Disneyland Hotel, and Paradise Pier Hotel, all before VGC was built.

Used points at Newport Bay Hotel at Disneyland Paris back when park tickets were included with the stay.

We've done it a few times at Yacht Club, Poly, Grand Flor, and Grand Cali ( and DCL ) for 2-night stays and had wonderful experiences. Then we'd go spend the remainder of the trip at a DVC. Probably won't do it again, but they were fun stays, and they are my points to use as I wish.

I agree with everyone who says that you should use the points to stay there if that is what your DH wants to do.

We won't hesitate to ever use points for other DVC options if we decide that is what we want to do that year. We bought them to cover our vacations and while there may be better "value" in DVC options then others, if they cover the trip we plan that there, then they are being used for the purpose they were intended.

Have fun!

They are your points and if that's what you want to do, don't worry about value. It may not be the best value choice, but I've never stayed at the Polynesian and I could see the desire to check out something new. It's not something I would do personally. Being on the monorail is always great (imho), but I can do that at BLT for the points. I'm buying DVC so we can upgrade from a 2 bed hotel room.

There is usually some sort of discount on a regular hotel room that you can find/use. Using points rarely make financial sense.

If I have the points and I, hubby or one of my kids wanted to try a different hotel on property, I would not hesitate. I might suggest a split stay and see how that goes.

For us I not so much how many points but the size of room I would be switching to. I like my own bedroom, kitchen, and washer and dryer.
