next week will be our first trip with magic bands and I am trying to decide the best way to pay for things . I have some $ on my visa reward card and then cash for the rest of our expenses . We are not on the dining plan as my mom has type 2 diabetes so doesn't make sense with what she will be eating. (just a fyi)

so I would like some advice on what will be easier -

- charge on magic band and pay off with the cash/reward card before we get to our charge limit

- just use gift card til it runs out and then use cash

- buy some gift cards with the cash and use gift cards

I will keep some cash for house keeping tips and misc - of course !

tia !

The only time is use cash is when traveling. I use it to tip people. That's really it. I don't use checks either. I write one of those a year.

I use my Visa reward card for everything until it runs out & then use my Disney Visa card for everything else. I can't pass up the double rewards points I get for those Disney purchases. Even if I have the cash, I just use it to make a huge payment on the Visa card.

I will bring a little cash along each trip, but usually just use it for tips here & there.

i think even drug dealers have switched to using bit coins im not sure if anyone uses cash anymore.. maybe adult entertainers?

thanks for the repsonses - even the sarcastic ones

No I use...I mean drug dealers...use the card swipe thing that plugs into your phone.

I'll be the oddball and admit I use cash for everything. I pay my travel agent in cash for my hotel and flight. I pay cash for dining and shopping (I admit I do VERY little shopping at Disney these days) and of course, tipping. I do put cash on my Disney gift card for the F&W booths. Just easier that way. And I pay for my annual passport in cash. I carry a credit card in case of necessity but I've never needed it on any of my Disney trips. I'm just a cash person. I'd hate to come home to a $5000 Visa bill!:scared:

I also admit to using cash only! Credit card only if necessary. We also use the gift card for the F&W booths.

I usually charge everything to the room, and then when I get back at night I stop and pay it off, using first reward points, then gift cards, and then my cash.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with paying with cash - you can do it in the parks if you want, or do the charge to the room pay off later method. Whatever is easier for you! The magic bands are almost dangerously easy to pay with, so that's one thing to look out for.

You can always use the magic band, call ahead the next morning to check your balance, and then pay it off on your way out with cash, leaving the rest in the room/safe/wherever you want to stash it!

Edit to add: I find gift cards easier to carry, so I usually buy then ahead of time. That said, if you don't use the whole balance, you are then "stuck" with a Disney gift card. So I tend to be a bit conservative when buying them now. I came in almost $100 under last trip, so I had to book another one to use it up. ;)

i would rather pay with cash at point of purchase but just wondering if it was easier to pay with the band then pay off at resort. agree with f w festival booth that gc easier but dont have that this trip - so will go the cash route

Doesn't make much difference. The band is on your wrist, so it's right there, but the registers take cash just as easily. Sometimes easier, since the magic bands can be buggy!

We did a little of each. We had dollars on the rewards card that we wanted to use since we don't get to Disney as often and will get there even less in the future. We used that til it ran out. We used the Disney VISA for a couple larger purchases, rental car, etc.
We didn't do any charging to our room. We just never have done that. We used cash for small purchases after we used up the rewards card balance. And truthfully I use cash as much at home as I do the VISA.
Also used cash to tip housekeeping, etc. I like having cash on hand, even if I'm not a big spender.

Cash user here, at least in the US. I won't run my credit card through any machine that only uses the magstrip, since fraud that way is laughably simple. In the US it seems very few machines offer chip and pin.

In Canada, I prefer to use debit, which is a separate card here.

Why anyone would use cash is beyond me! :) Don't forget what George Clooney's character said in Up in the Air...

"I don't spend a nickel, if I can help it, unless it somehow profits my mileage account." :thumbsup2

I use cash and cards,no more than 20% of people only use cards.Cash is still used regularly by a lot of people.

When we travel, we use cash for tips and misc. items and carry about $500.00. We consider a credit card cash as we pay it in full every month. We get our rewards. If we have charges that we don't recognize, i.e. become victims of fraud (which unfortunately we have had this happen several times) the card has zero liability. I know we could use a debit card which is linked directly to our checking/savings account. However, should fraud occur this method is much harder to resolve getting your money back. It is stressful once you've been burned. To answer your question, I vote some cash and a credit card!:thumbsup2

I have not seen anyone use cash in years. I must be in that 20% and not know anyone in the other 80%.

Amex charge card for practically everything - I then track all my purchases at home on Quicken.

The bands are more convenient at the parks because you don't have to carry all that cash around with you. On the downside, the bands are insidious because you never "run out of cash" when spending on the bands either!
