Does Anyone Use A White Noise Machine?

Or as it is called on the box a "sound conditioner?"

I asked for one for Christmas because our house is noisy. I have all hardwood floors and vaulted ceilings. I go to bed early and sometimes the DH or the kids are still downstairs watching TV. The TV is not on loud or anything, but because of the way my house is, the noise just carries terribly.

So, I thought a a noise machine would help.

I used it for the first time last night. It did very well while the house was still "active." However, the darn thing woke me up last night about 12:30 and I finally had to turn it off--it was driving me insane.

The instructions say that it might take a week to get used to. I'm not sure I can do this...

I have one!!! I got when I worked 3rd shift back in 2001. I can't sleep well without it now. It even goes to WDW with us :)

We use one, only we use a very fancy....fan! That's right, a plain old window fan that is turned around. Not only does it create a very nice white noise, but it circulates the air in the bedroom without blowing directly on us. We live on a fairly noisy road and the noise from the fan definitely helps. It does take awhile to get uses to it, but once you do you might find that you have difficulty sleeping without it.

I use one all the time and take it with me when I travel, I can't sleep without it! In the summer between the A/C unit and the noise machine in my room it sounds like a wind tunnel in there but that is how I sleep. I don't remember it taking any time to get used to though,* but I also slept through the Cheetah girls concert, an MRI and a root canal so I like noise when I sleep LOL) why don't you just start with it on very low for awhile until you are used to it then make it higher.

I did have it on the lowest setting last night. It was fine as long as everyone was up. But I felt like I had a wind tunnel in my room in the middle of the night. Normally, my house is VERY quiet once everyone goes to bed.

You'll get used to the hum at night. I can't sleep without a white noise.

Yes. I'm so used to the noise machine that I can't sleep in a quiet room anymore. It's too quiet without the white noise.

The best white noise machine I have found is called Sleep-Mate. I found it has pure white noise and not a recorded sound. The ones that have a recorded sound kinda have a rhythm and when I notice the rhythm that drives me crazy. But, a small fan on the night sound has worked best. I don't like the air blowing on me so I direct it away from me but the sound does the trick in blocking out noises.

We have the sleep mate and we LOVE it. We got it originally for DS thinking he'd sleep better. Didn't seem to make much of a difference. Now we use it in the Master Bedroom. I go to bed about 6 hours before DH so I turn it on so I can sleep without disruption (DH talking on the phone, moving about in his office, DS waking up, etc.). When DH comes to bed he shuts it off. Then on weekends I turn it on when I get up so DS and I don't wake up DH. We're usually up around 6:00 but DH sleeps til 10.

opposite for me.....

I grew up in a noisy house where my dm stayed up late.

I can't fall asleep unless tv/radio is on. I can pretty much fall asleep anywhere.

However, I can't stand white noise though. (a fan or the furnace running for long periods actually wakes me up).
