I was planning on getting a spray on tan before we cruised so I wouldn't look like a pastey Irish woman in the Bahamas. Of course once I get there I'll be using mega sunscreen. Does anyone else tan before they go?

I am planning on getting a spray tan before our cruise. Also, it helps me from not burning. Go for it.

I was thinking about the spray on tan BUT I wondered what your skin feels like after it's done? I'm hoping that tan skin will make me look skinny:lmao:

just started, but in the beds, since I had a GC for one month unlimited from a year ago I now cashed in...I leave in just over 3 weeks and am trying to build a base tan...

Thats the only time you will find me in a tanning bed is about 3 month out I will go 1 a week to build up slowly. Then I will go 3x a week (Mon/Wed/Fri) 3 weeks before the trip and give my skin a rest 1 week before going.

Remember to always wear your protective eye wear!

The rest of the year I am a white pasty chick!:rotfl:

The only time I tan is before a tropical vacation. Otherwise I burn like mad. The problem I have with spray tans is they really only last a few days. Great for one event, but not for a length of time (for me anyways).

Since I'm flying in 2 days before the cruise it doesn't help me at all! Plus, it can come off unevenly- places where your clothing is tends to rub your skin more (therefore exfoliating it).

I've had one time last summer where I actually looked splotchy where my waist band was on my shorts, and dif bikini tops rubbing weird. Then you have to scrub like crazy to get it all off. lol. Too muh trouble for a worry free vacation. I'm so pasty white that anything like that is really noticable. I prefer a build up of color:)

I use the tanning lotions. Maybe I'll look into the spray for this cruise. The glare from my skin could cause accidents. LOL

LOL!! Glare. Hee hee. So true for myself. Here in rainy Seattle if I want something to use on myself without going anywhere I use this neutrogena spray mist tan. It comes in a can and you can do medium and dark. I have medium but do a couple coats. It works great for places you can reach, it says not to rub in but I do anyways then wash my hands. The can lasts a long time too. About the price of a spray tan (15 or so) but you get more applications. So if you have someone to help spray, its a good choice too:)

I go to LA Tan where we are and I use a sea salt and oil scrub every day for a week before I get it . I'll get my tan the day before we fly out. But it usually lasts me about a week. Especially if you moisturize every day. My friend and her husband BOTH got skin cancer , what are the odds of that! So I'm scared to go to a tanning bed.Plus I always burned in them .

Please stay off tanning beds! They're total death traps!

I had only one spray tan in my life. I was told not to shower until the next day. As the tan developed I was looking very very dark. Funny my teeth never looked whiter! So the next morning I had a shower and EVERYTHING washed off. In fact I think I was even whiter than before I got sprayed!

I find St. Tropez tanning mousse is pretty good and looks natural. :cool2:

I just went to the spray tan place yesterday to get some info... I have been self-tanning for years on my own, but it's tricky to get the right coverage.

If you want to go that route (on your own), I do recommend exfoliating like crazy a couple of days beforehand, using disposable plastic gloves when applying, using a tanner with a bronzer so you can see where you're putting it, and moisturizing like crazy every day afterward. And if you decide to bring your self-tanner with you on vacation, remember to put it in a carefully-sealed ziploc because for some reason those things are prone to leakage/spillage and obviously they could make a huge mess on your belongings. I buy all of mine from a beauty supply chain, and use only those brands (not had as much luck with Clinique, or what they sell at WalMart).

Not sure if I'm going to do it, but pretty sure I want to try it and see how it compares to what I'm doing on my own. Here they charge $35 for a full-body spray and it's supposed to last 5-7 days. They also sell a self-tanning product that I could apply while away to keep it going.

So to the OP, I haven't done it yet, either, but I think that since you don't really know how it's going to "take" on your skin and whether you will like how it looks as it starts to wear away, I would recommend doing it a few weeks beforehand as a test run. I know that will cost you more money, but I think in the long run it will give you peace of mind.

I have a friend who does spray tanning at her spa but I'm having a scrub and massage on the ship so no self tanning for me...the scrub takes it right off :scared1:

I'm tanning in a bed this time...not something I usually do but besides my summer clothes looking frightful against my white skin, the tropial sun sill scorch me even with a high SPF. Once in a great while isn't terrible and I figure a gradual indoor tan is better than an outdoor burn anyday.

I'm going to the tanning bed for a week before my cruise (not staying for the total allowable time). Just wanted to get a little color before going. Even a butterball turkey looks better browned than raw;).

I'm with you on this one... we just lost my mom's fiance to melanoma a few weeks ago. Skin cancer is terrible, but melanoma is a HORRIBLE, sneaky disease. Trust me, you never want to see someone close to you have to go through that, or worse yet, go through it yourself.

It is not worth it. Especially when there are other options.

While I appreciate and understand your rationale, I just wanted to mention that there are some amazing sunscreens out there nowadays. Ones that have been recommended by dermatologists and skin cancer specialists. One brand is called Blue Lizard, and it's supposed to work great if you apply it correctly.

I used to do it every other week last summer they had a deal on Mondays where you could get it for $10 . But since I'll be going in on a friday I'll have to pay $30.00 . Everyone told me I had a nice tan and mine didn't wash off the next day . That would have been horrible. The tricky part is always your hands and feet. But they give you this cream to slather over them so it won't look streaky.I also bought their self tanner to keep it going longer. I liked the spray tan because it doesn't rub off on your bras and clothes.

Thats too funny:lmao: and very true!!

That's one thing that drives me crazy about the self-tanners I use -- I have to apply them almost every day, and since they all have bronzers in them, they are always coming off on my clothes! And the worst is when -- maybe TMI here, sorry -- I have on a white shirt on a hot day. All it takes is a tiny bead of sweat on my chest or midsection and I end up with a brown spot/stripe on the front of my shirt! :rotfl:

I also occasionally had that happen when I didn't even have recently-applied bronzer on... so that's good to know you get better results with the professional spray tan! Also good to know that you used their self-tanner and that helped... that was exactly what I was going to do, use their moisturizer and self-tanner during my trip. I know it won't be perfect since it's a 10-day trip, but I think it'll be better than nothing.

So glad other people have experience with this -- and so glad that the OP asked about it! I don't know anyone locally who has done this and I don't exactly want to start asking around or post it on my Facebook page...
