Does anyone regret buying DVC? Or wish they'd chosen a different home resort?

Wouldn't say that. you'd be surprised on how many teens like to go to Disneyworld. and im talking 14-16

Couldn't agree more. My teens 14 and 16 and they LOVE our yearly and sometimes twice a year trip. They often refer to DVC resorts as their home away from home. We have taken trips to Europe, Hawaii, Carribbean, etc, but to them there's no place like "home".

DVC made it affordable for us to go frequently.

We have owned for over 10 years now and have no regrets. As for home resort - don't get too hung up on it. Your tastes will change over time and there is not much you can do without taking a bath in costs to sell and buy. Never had a problem 7 months out in 10 years. And our favorite resort has changed 3 times now! Glad we did not try to sell and rebuy.

We're planning on buying into DVC...but before taking on another monthly payment would really like some feedback from current members...would love to know the good AND the bad. Thanks!

we have family in the orlando area so for the first few years we loved dvc since it's so much more comfortable for a family than hotel rooms and being close to the parks is great. now we are a bit disneyed out (star wars weekend last year was hot and crowded) so we are renting our points out to do a beach vaca this year.
i'm glad we bought but i wish we bought less so we could do disney every other year and bank points rather than having to rent them out. we bought 220 which really isn't alot however the yearly tax/assesment is around $1000 which is almost the cost of renting a condo hence renting the points vs banking.

NO REGRETS - best buy we ever made. Bought OKW 1st year (back when you got free DW tics). Love OKW- have visited several other resorts but OKW feels like home. HH is where we go for a quick weekend a couple of times a year - great restaurant city. Loved AK, kids didn't like Ft Wilderness - DW wants to stay at Bay Lake Towers, but only if we can get castle view. Only resort we didn't like was Vero Beach.

BTW used points to go on Member's Cruise and this was the best vacation ever for me and DW - go to meet many DIS posters.

Love my purchase, love my home resort. If I needed more points, I would add on at AKV.

sorry - but i regret it. 600 points a year. kids have school activities that keep us from planning ahead. working around exemption for finals and just trying to not cause too much make-up work... whenever I call "nothing is available". using my time just seems to be high dollar hotel rooms instead of money saving DVC property. wasn't the best match for us at this time in our lives. live and learn.

I regret not getting more points. It took me a year to convince my wife. After our first night at Boardwalk all she could say is "WE'VE GOT TO GET MORE POINTS" Someday soon we will but times are scary right now.

I have no regrets over buying 250 Beach Club points 4 years ago. My only "regret" was that resale point prices have come down a bit in the past year or so - but I guess that is a buying opportunity to pick up a few more points!

I am sorry to hear that - life changes/patterns change, etc.

Did you buy all in one contract? if not, I know it might not be the best of times, but you can always sell some.

Right now we reached the stage where we have more than enough. My son used a week last year with his girlfriend and this year again in October. Right now we need to go more often, invite friends/family, book a 1 BDR even though a studio is fine for the two of us or book a cruise. I know our patterns will change again soon. One of the other children will start going, someday the grandchildren will come, and medical problems will not prevent us from going more often. We are not ready to sell or buy any.

Try booking a cruise or an ABD vacation.

We have no regrets. We purchased at SSR first and added a resale contract at BWV a few years later. My only regret is that I wished we had the same use years for both contracts.

Looking at buying resale here for SSR. We currently own at AKV. I was wondering just that about Use-year... what the positives and negatives of having the same use year for both contracts?

We so absolutely do not have any regrets! :lovestruc We own at AKV and love it! We have 2 children, a daughter nearly 5 years old and a son who is 20 months. We take 1 long and 1 short trip each year and are able to use our 210 points per year to do that in a studio. We keep meaning to try other resorts but just love AKV and so do our children! They go crazy when the ysee the animals from our balcony or the viewing areas! We even used our points to stay at the Disneyland Hotel in California pre-GCV. We love our DVC and are currently looking at resale to purchase about 100-150 more points. In the next few years we intend to expand our family by 1 more and will need the extra points to continue our WDW vacations in a 1 bedroom!

Chalk me into the group of members that regret not buying years earlier!
We scheduled a presentation tour in 98 but backed out last minute. Huge regret now! Prices were alot higher in 2008 when we finally made the initial buy at AKV.

However, things happen for a reason. Back in 98 I would have had to finance and the thought of that into something I didn't completely understand was a major factor. Plus I had no idea I would desire to visit WDW 4-6 times a year, year after year. Ten years later and my financial picture and DVC knowledge was quite a bit different.

My only other minor regret is buying my second add-on via Disney directly and not though resale ($$ saver). Such a simple process. I now have the two home resorts that I have ever desired too.

Point wise - I always regret not having enough! :rolleyes1
Of course, there is a limit in the annual dues I can afford! Just don't tell the fun side of my brain that!

After owning another Resort (non-Disney) for 10 years, Disney is a Godsend after dealing with that. Eventhough we have only owned DVC for about a week now, just dealing with our Disney guide and the no hassle and no bullying us to buy is such a breath of fresh air. Our other Condo that we own (in the midst of selling it), we were pushed and bullied into buying and have hated owning it ever since. As for our Home Resort, I am very happy with where we chose. BLT is so centrally located in WDW and we have the luxury of having the monorail and bus as our transportation options. Of course we do plan on trying out the other DVCs if they are available, but if they are not, we will have no problems staying at our home resort. From what I have heard many times on these DVC boards, you choose the Home Resort by where you want to stay and I believe this is to be true :goodvibes

We have 7 memberships, 5 with same UY and 2 with different. If I did it again I would have all the same UY.

My regrets:

Not finding the disboard before purchasing. We didn't get ANY incentives on our first contract. We were shopping at the mall, and came across Disneys Doorway to Dreams.

Not buying sooner.

Not having more points. So far we have 320, looking to add-on when they have a GREAT incentive deal. :)

Like many others the only regrets we have are not buying more points and not buying sooner! We have been able to take so many amazing vacations because of our DVC membership that we may not have been able to take otherwise. At one time I estimated the cash cost for each trip we had taken and it slightly exceeded the amount paid for our points and we've only been members since 2006. Additionally, although home resort is important keep in mind if you plan ahead you can always try and get reservations at another resort. Extreme flexibility is the beauty of DVC ownership.

Go for it. I really don't think you will be disappointed.

The only regret was in not purchasing more points up front. We bought 160 points at VGC and just added another 50. After our first stay last April it was clear that we always want to stay in at least a 1 bedroom. The studios are very nice, but I really like having the extra space, the kitchen, the living room and the ability to invite friends and family to join us.

Our home resort VGC is great since we're in Utah and make more trips to DLR than to WDW (although DW prefers WDW). I prefer DLR. Our UY (August) is great since we don't tend to travel to DLR (or WDW) in the summer months. Overall we're really happy.

Having the same UY and contracts in the same (exact) names you can combine points to make reservations at 11 months if points are at the same resort and at 7 months different resort. (you maintain the same membership number for all contracts)

With a different UY you have a different member number and have to either transfer points from 1 contract to the other to do 1 booking if using all points or make 2 different reservations and linking them together. You cannot book 1 night with 2 different contracts (say you have 10 points available at SSR and 15 at AKV) unless you transfer the points which you can only do 1 time a UY. I have 5 contracts, 3 resorts but made sure I had the same UY it is much easier to keep track of and is great when booking at 7 months.

Adminjedi I think we bought your SSR via resale and will enjoy staying at the THV's in January 2011 and next Christmas...LOL! Just kidding!!!

We own at SSR and AKV. We bought at SSR in 2006, are founding members at AKV and just added on via resale at SSR specifically to stay at the THV's. We love them!!!

We have stayed at AKV's in 2BR savanna views 3 times and LOVE them. LOVE THV's. We've stayed at OKW, VWL and LOVED that too. Next week we will be staying in a standard at BWV's. I was not able to get BCV's or BWV board walk view at the 7month mark (but did not wait list either!) BCV is where we have not been able to get yet. We will get there eventually, but not at least our next three trips. If I was not okay with that, then I would've added on there! As you will hear, buy where you want to stay.

One regret.... when we bought our original contract we sold back our first year's points because we were not planning to go right away, then DH said, let's go for a long weekend. Had to borrow from the start...whatever! Only regret!
