I'm trying to find a tartan for my FIL.

Theyre from Scotland so there are hundreds of Tartans and the name is fairly common there.

I would love to get him something though in his family tartan.

Any ideas?

Thanks :)

First mistake -- if only there were only hundreds of tartans. There are thousands of tartans.

You will need to know not only the family name, but also the part of Scotland their ancestors come from to help track down the family tartan.

Here is a place to start. Once you find the tartan, then just find a Scottish shop -- there is one in Boise, Idaho that should be able to help you.

We had a booth next to theirs at a fair last year. Sandy's a great gal, I can't say enough good things about her. Their prices are fair and they really care about what they do. :thumbsup2

great start! Thanks :)

Well I found mine, or rather my mothers.

isnt it nice?

Youre right I will have to figure out what part of Scotland his father came from... hmmmm not sure he knows. The grandfather refused to talk about it. :( and is long since passed....seems a little digging is in order....

I've been down the same road, searing. It turns out my family didn't warrant it's own tartan, but we are allowed to use the tartan of the clan that my family used to live with and work under.

Great to see another Great Big Sea fan. I'm originally from the east coast of Canada and have loved their music for mannnnny years!

Hi Highland! :)

Dh is from Calgary so we've known of them for several years too arent they great? We went to see them in February and were lucky enough to be invited out to the after party with them. What fun! Theyre a great bunch of guys :)

Ok well I was WAYYYYY off. FILs sister had told me they were from Scotland but I called FIL and he swears they are from Ireland and that was a major bone of contention between the 2 of them ekkk. Way to start a family dispute, Binny

Anyway, they are from Cork. FIL had apparently done some digging that I didnt know about and was able to fill me in on several details and gave me some great ideas.

Would love to hear more though. Im thinking I will get him something special and dh as well :)

Hanging out with the band... too cool!!!

You had me wondering for a second. There were a lot of Scots moved to Ireland for a while and then emmigrated to North America.

Oh well... at least you're on the right track now. :wave2:
