Any airline based in the US is safe, airlines are tightly regulated by the FAA.

Yes, SW is not only safe, and cheap but fun. They have a "relaxed" attitude here are some reported examples:

Once on a Southwest flight, the pilot said, "We've reached our cruising altitude now, and I'm turning off the seat belt sign. I'm switching to autopilot, too, so I can come back there and visit with all of you for the rest of the flight."

From a Southwest Airlines employee.... "Welcome aboard Southwest Flight XXX to YYY. To operate your seatbelt, insert the metal tab into the buckle, and pull tight. It works just like every other seatbelt, and if you don't know how to operate one, you probably shouldn't be out in public unsupervised. In the event of a sudden loss of cabin pressure, oxygen masks will descend from the ceiling. Stop screaming, grab the mask,and pull it over your face. If you have a small child traveling with you, secure your mask before assisting with theirs. If you are traveling with two small children, decide now which one you love more.

Before you flame me - SWA is as safe as any airline regulated by the FAA.

Consider however the events at Midway in December 2005 and decide if following the spirit of the law versus the letter of the law is in your best interest. Namely, SWA flies 737-700 aircraft as does Continental. On the day in question, CON cancelled all Midway arrivals due to lack of a safety margin in stopping distances and SWA did not. It seems that CON adds a 15% safety margin to stopping distances and SWA does not. It is one thing the FAA leaves to the airlines to decide. On the day in question, it would take something like 1725 feet to stop a 737-700 based on weather and runway conditions and the runway was one foot longer than the calculation. SWA chose to land despite having no safety margin. While I can only speculate, it seems to me that a flight not flown is profit not made to SWA and a business decision outweighed a safety decision. This is why congress is now looking into this area of airline regulation as it leaves too much discretion to the airline.

That reminds me of something a Southwest flight attendant said on a flight I took last year - upon landing in Hartford, on a nonstop flight from Vegas, the attendant came over the intercom and gave the "thanks for flying with us speech" and then ended it by saying "and now, as your parents said to you on your 18th birthday - get your stuff and get the hell out!" It was so funny!

SWA is extremely safe, as are all US airlines. Where SWA saves money is by buying older planes, upgrading them a bit to make them appear nicer to the passengers and with the latest avionics for pilots, and owning the planes outright. That way, they only have maintenance and fuel costs on each plane instead of debt as well. The other airlines tend to buy brand new planes, and usually have debt on them, which kills their bottom line, and is forcing them to operate constantly near bankruptcy, and spikes in fuel costs kill them. SWA is probably the most profitable airline in the US at this point.

I also think the fact that SWA flies more direct flights than other airlines probably saves on fuel costs as well.

Personally, I love flying SWA. True, they may have some customer service problems on the ground (not in the air, though), but for their dirt cheap fares, it doesn't bother me that much.
