Does anyone know how you go about setting up a scholarship fund in memory of someone?

DD, her co-workers, and the entire staff of well over 300 employees would like to do this in memory of DD's friend that just passed away today..

DD just called me on her cell phone - she can't sleep - and wanted me to post here to see if anyone could give me (her) some direction in how this is accomplished..

Do you set up a bank as the "trustee" and have the donations sent there, or what?

Any help would be greatly appreciated..

C.Ann I am so sorry to here about your DD's friend. I had been following the thread and didn't realize she had passed away today. My prayers go out to her family and you DD in their time of need. I don't have any info but wanted to send:hug: to you and your DD.

Contact an organization to administer the fund.....her church or other such entity. You can ask that donation be made to XXXX in her memory for the scholarship. It will need to be set up, probably not just sent to an account an individual controls at the bank. Each organization controls how the fund needs to be endowed prior to disbursement.

We did ours through the firehousethat Matt was involved in....the money goes in their account but we control who it goes to each year.

My condolences to you and your DD....I had read your thread about your DD's friend...I am so sorry! :(

Scholarships-You may want to check out your local Community Foundations. I think they could set your DD friend's scholarship in her name...the employee's and friends as the grant makers.(not sure thou')
My DD applied for a few scholarship through our local community foundation. You could look into this site, which lists foundations by state, as I'm not sure which state you live in. Community Foundations
Many of the scholarships we have here are for local students. Examples: For a student planning a career in a certain area, or a student that attended a certain high school. Most are specific as to whom they grant them to.
My Dd just received a scholarship that was listed something like this: For a student that had a relative that went to a certain Teachers college, (this college closed years ago, but it was her grandmother's alumi.)
Good luck in your search. ;)

Ann,
Just logged on and saw this. My deepest sympathy goes out to you and your daughter. Her friend was so fortunate to have your daughter in her life. I'm sure she knows how hard your dd tried to take care of her.

God Bless,

Nancy

you hand dd have my condolanecs as wwe ll, as for the scholarship, try and see if there is a local scholarship fund, yjey administer the local ones here, if not approach the finacial aid office at the nearest u niversity, or at the school of choice, and see if they have hte info you need.

I second the recommendation of finding an organization to administer the scholarship. Someone needs to be responsible for not only distributing the money each year but choosing the recipients.

You might want to consider approaching the PTA for the high school she attended to see if they would be willing to do it.

No advice - Just  for you and your Daughter.
