I get these crazy ideas and think I'm more crafty then I am  . I think back on my childhood and remember how gifted my mom was (still is). She used to make us Halloween costumes that were amazing. She still does sew although really only does alterations and makes smaller things (curtains, etc). She offered to teach me a bit and buy me a sewing machine for my birthday (if I want).

I really only want to start out small but would love to progress into Halloween costumes and clothing, etc.

My questions... how hard is it? Do you enjoy it? Do you use your machine a lot? Do you have a machine you recommend?

I have always found sewing fairly easy. It's mostly a matter of following directions. My mom tried to teach me to sew as a child, but we clashed too much and I really didn't want to learn from her. I did take a class through our community college as an adult. These days I mostly make Halloween costumes, made my daughter a Martha Washington dress for her colonial day, etc. DD has taken up sewing and makes purses, skirts, and has progressed to fancy dresses for dances at school. I have a basic Viking machine, but my friends who sew a lot seem to like Bernina.

I sew, although I don't think of myself as an expert at it, by any means.

I was in a similar situation to the one you're describing. I did learn a little bit about sewing when I was a teenager, both from my mom and in home ec at school, but I forgot everything I ever knew about it by the time I was an adult.

When I was in my 20s, I started thinking about taking it up again. My mom had given me a sewing machine when I got married. I bought some patterns for simple things, but the instructions might as well have been in a different language, because they included so many terms that I didn't remember. I started taking the patterns over to my mom's house, and she would talk through all the things I didn't understand with me. It didn't take long before I could read and understand the pattern directions on my own.

When I had my daughter, I started sewing a lot more, and made a lot of clothes for her when she was little (sewing for a little kid is the most fun, IMO). By the time she got into her older elementary/middle school years, she no longer wanted clothing sewn by her mom, and while I still made the occasional skirt or something for myself, I sewed a lot less after that.

I am now looking forward a few years to grandchildren so I can have someone to sew for again :thumbsup2

Sewing is pretty easy and at the fabrics stores like Joann's they have book with illustrations that can help get you started. Start with something easy to get the hang of it and then work up from there.
