My son wants a cell phone, but I can't decide whether to add on to my existing Verizon plan, switch to Cingular (which would be $10 a month cheaper than Verizon), or get us both Tracphones. I don't use many minutes each month, but I like the idea of being able to call whoever, whenever, but I also like the idea of not being tied into a monthly bill.

Do Tracphones get good service like the other companies? Are the minutes easy to load to your phone? Do you have to dial extra numbers to make a call?

I actually got better service then my sister with her cell phone coverage. I have a cell phone for emergencies and when we are out of town. My husband takes one in his pocket because he is on a back road to work at five am....usually very dark out. My granddaughter has one and it is for emergencies too......yes I love it and it works well and even in Florida too.....

Yes,My sister and I both love our TracFones. We get a signal where most cell phone users can't! That's a big plus!
A big Yes to that question!!

I have one and it's fine. I only use it when I'm on the internet at home (I still have dial-up) and just in case of emergency when I'm out. I did have a problem with my first phone - one day it just up and wiped itself out (I had about 260 units with a year of service), but I called Tracfone and they sent me a replacement phone. When I reactivated it, they not only replaced those "lost" units, but gave me 20 more plus 2 extra months of service. No problems since!

I used Tracfone for years and loved it. Their service was just as good as any other, and I can say the same for their customer service as well. :thumbsup2

However, it did get more expensive when it came to the kids. I eventually gave in and added us all to a regular service plan.

I've had a tracfone ever since I kicked AT&T to the curb after some ridiculous charges I received near to the end of my contract... :furious: It's been about 3 years now.

I RARELY use a cellphone so it didn't pay for me to have a monthly bill. I have a flip tracfone that costs me next to nothing. My son also has one and we use it to let each other know when it's time to pick him up or if I'm late. It's perfect for things like that.

I also use it in Tennessee where my sister lives and Florida where I go A LOT.... :teeth: ... works great.

No you don't have to dial extra numbers and yes, the mins are very simple to add since they added the refill feature on the phone.

I have a Virgin Mobile Phone - same "pay as you go" concept as TracPhone, but I like their pricing, service and phones a bit better.

Pay as you go cellphones use the name networks as traditional cellphones, so you get the same calling/connection quality. You just have a different payment scheme. If you don't use your phone much, the cost is usually cheaper. And not having to deal with contracts and complicated bills is great.

I am glad to see some positive reviews. DS13 has one wrapped under the tree.

Mine does, too! He has the little cheap one so I UPGRADED him to a camera phone! He loses NOTHING so I think this will be okay for him.

It came free Black Friday weekend with the 600 min card (400 plus 200 with bonus) that has the double minutes! All for $99! It's up to $129.99 now but it's still a good deal. He had 60 minutes on this current phone and 3 months later he now has 12. I think the 600 will last him a year!

Before we got our "regular" cell phones, we had a pay-as-you-go. We found Virgin to cost a lot less per minute than Tracfone. I don't know if that's changed, but I remember Tracfone charged double for any phone call while you were roaming and the "home areas" were so small we would have almost always been roaming.

DH and I both have Tracfone and they work well for us. We don't use them much....mostly to call each other, but they work everywhere we've gone in VA, PA, OH, WV and MD. Plus, there is always some promotion running for free minutes (just google "free minutes" and "Tracfone" and you'll find them).

I had a Tracphone for a while and I liked it except for the fact that I had to buy new minutes every 2 months wither i had used up my min or not. I just wish it really was pay as you go and not pay when you use up your min or every 2 months whatever comes first. Other then that it was a great phone. But I love my Verizon phone now even more

Well, DH made the decision for me. He renewed my Verizon for 2 years and got me a chocolate phone. Then, he got my son a Go phone so he could call him on his Cingular for no minutes. Whatever. He's an impulse shopper, so I shouldn't be surprised, and I love my chocolate phone.
