This is the second or third time that Karissa has had a cold that settled in her eyes. basically it looks sort of like pink eye but it isnt. She has been to the doctor for it and they said it was just a cold.

She has it now again and is home sick today poor thing.

Does anyone else get this?

no, there isnt a growth or anything, its just a little pink and has been draining (sorry gross) a lot.

I think a stye is a bump isnt it?

It is conjuctivitis (pink eye). How did they determine it was viral and not bacterial?

The Doctor just said that it wasnt "pink enough" it is mostly just the drainage that is bad. They arent irritated at all and not sore. He said that was the difference.

He said Pink eye hurts a lot (Ive had it I agree!) and she says it doesnt hurt at all.

This is something that happens to DS11 sometimes. I think the first time it happened, he wasn't even a year old. I don't know why it happens, but sometimes the cold just goes up into the eyes, so they are then red and kinda icky. And yes, his teachers always think it's pink eye. I remember in 3rd grade, the school nurse called and wouldn't believe me that it wasn't pink eye - I had to take him to the doctor and take back a note stating it wasn't pink eye.

In thinking about it, it's been a few years now since he's had this...so maybe it's something they grow out of? How old is your daughter?

DD had a cold last week also and her left eye was a little pink all week however she did not experience much leakage.

I have a virus in my eye that gets like that sometimes. It's very similar to the virus that causes cold sores (herpes simplex virus) and every now-&-then will flare up. It gets runny and a little pink & puffy.

Most of the time the virus is dormant but whever it flares up (every 1-2 years or so) I have to go to the optholologist & get a prescription for drops. It takes several weeks before it's completely healed but seems better within a week or so.

I get this every stinking year, for about a week at a time, then it is gone for for 3-4 weeks, then it strikes again. I have been getting it for about 10 years now.

I have been to my PCM and to the opthamologist and both say it is a viral infection, similar to a cold, but not pink eye. I get this goop in the corner of my eyes that I call "eye snot". It's pretty gross!

I have to wear my glasses during this time (which I hate!) because the goop gets on my contacts and causes cloudy vision.

Yup. I've had it a couple times. If I remember right (this was a few years ago...) the doc said a viral form may start in one eye and will quickly spread to the other; there's really nothing you can do to stop it or treat it, it just has to run its course like any other virus.

The bacterial form, which can be treated with antibiotic drops, tends to stay in one eye if you are careful and use the drops to clear it up.

I've had both kinds, and I found the viral form more painful (enormouse eye pressure) and more disgusting; great globs of goo totally clouded my vision at every blink, it was maddening!
