Does anyone else in the United States get off for Mardi Gras?

We are thinking of going to WDW during our week of Mardi Gras holidays. I think it is late February. Is there any other states that also celebrate Mardi Gras? I don't want to go when it's busy. We went Labor Day week two years ago. It wasn't busy, just HOT!!!!

Thanks,
Jennifer

We don't celebrate Mardi Gras but that is the week our kids are on school vacation and we will be in WDW then. A lot of schools in NH and the northeast are on vacation then. I went the same time last year though and although I have never been at a super busy time of the year I thought the crowds were reasonable.

Well, you know we celebrate here in La.

But this year our district won't be out for Mardi Gras. They are using those days to make up for the hurricanes. I don't know about the rest of La. I think most of north La. will still have a holiday, but those of us around NO will have school.

Is Mardi Gras the 28th of Feb ?? Our schools have off Feb 20-24 for winter break.

I'll be there this year. We actually booked our air and room in an apartment house in French Quarter before Katrina hit. AA will let us get vouchers if we want to cancel, but we haven't tried to contact apartment owners yet as we wanted to give them a little time to get back in and wait til things settled down a little before confirming whether or not we still have ressies. If we do, we plan to go and celebrate with anyone and everyone who is there. I have a feeling it may be one of the most special and sentimental mardi gras yet! (I may not get a toilet, but se la vi)

I had no idea that some states had winter breaks! I wish we did in Texas. Do you still get a Spring Break as well? Spring Break in Texas is normally in March. :flower:

In at least the 3 coastal counties in Mississippi, some businesses (and the public schools) get out for mardi gras. I don't know of any other counties in Mississippi where that is true.

I don't know of any schools in the northeast (PA) that get off for that. There is usually an inservice day scheduled for Presidents Day, but they usually use that as a snow make up day. The schools don't really get any type of winter break, they get a spring break the week before Easter through Easter Monday.

in MA they get a week off in feb and april.

I go to college at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo CA, and Mardi Gras is a war zone. 2000 extra cops come in to our city to enforce the law, 500 riot officers, 2 tanks. Its nuts! well 2 years ago we had a few riots here, so its understandable, but still.

Usually @ mardi gras it looks like 1/2 of new orleans is @ disneyworld. This year I would be willing to bet there will be far less people @ the parks. All of the surrounding areas of new orleans are usually out on holliday for mardi gras, but not this year. Just my opinion but I think there will be fewer people than in years past. The years past, mardi gras has been a great time to go to WDW. We were thinking of going this year if our dd would have been off.

We celebrate in NW Louisiana, but we don't get off for school that I know of. At least my son't school doesn't get off school. We usually have two prettty good parades the two Sat before and one on Fat Tuesday night. A couple of smaller ones, like the Mardi Paws parade (a pet parade) on Sunday before Fat Tuesday. Our parades are more family oriented than the ones they have had down in NOLA.

I think that the schools around Mobile, AL also get off, but they may not be off this year, it depends on how long they were closed for the hurricane.

Funny story: My niece, now 18, grew up in Baton Rouge, and she was about 12 when she discovered that the rest of the country really doesn't have Mardi Gras at all, let alone 2 days off from school. She thought it was SO SAD!

Well being form south LA most of the schools will only be out mardi gras day this year due to the hurricanes that beat our state up this year. Mississippi around gulfport and biloxi usually have off during this time but they were hit just as hard as we were, so they will have to make up days during this time. There are very few schools that will have this time off so i think the mardi gras crowd from LA will be small to say the least. Delta has cancelled our flight and rebooked us already because of cancellations from the New Orleans area.

We will definitely be there because we in south LA have earned this much needed r and r.

NYC public schools will have a week off in February (Mid Winter Recess) and 7 days off in April (Spring Recess)

Thanks everyone for replying. We are making our hurricane days up with our Thanksgiving and Christimas holidays so I think we will go ahead and plan to go during our Mardi Gras holiday. I am sorry that MS and LA will lose their Mardi Gras Holidays. I don't think that if you miss more than 10 days you should have to make them up. We only missed nine here in Mobile. If we would have missed 10 our governor wouldn't have made us make them up. That's the bad thing about living on the coast! Hurricanes!!
