Does anyone else have a child that...

We returned late yesterday after a day of testing at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA.

My son does indeed fall on the tail end of the Autism Spectrum. He was also diagnosed with an expressive language delay (which we knew about), as well as a communication disorder. The good news is that he has an above average IQ.

Also, after spending an afternoon in a children's hospital, I realize how very lucky I am that my child "only" has the disorders that he does. It was simply heartbreaking to see what other parents have to deal with.

My next step is to have his IEP fine tuned. Also, I am going to buy the book called "Quirky Kids". The doctor suggested that my husband and I read it. It is available on Amazon.com if anyone wants to take a look.

Hugs to all of you very special parents!

I agree about feeling lucky. When we were having DS diagnosed, we as parents had to fill out this very very long questionnaire relating to traits or actions that our child exhibited. We felt fortunate that we were able to answer "no" to whether he threatens people with knives or smears feces on walls! We thought "On my goodness, there are parents who answer yes to those questions!"

I read the article in Newsweek about the guy who wrote Quirky Kids and plan to read the book. It's funny...my side of the family hardly thinks he's quirky at all and really enjoy him; husband's side of the family don't like him at all. (I guess I know which side the AS came from!)

Quorky Kids is actually written by 2 female doctors from the Boston area. I should know, I helped with the manuscript and I am credited in the book :D

I love the way this book is set up and written. It gives pretty much non judgemental and unbias information about what is out there and available for our Quirky Kids. I recommend it to all the parents I come in contact with here at work as well as all the staff.
