Does an OP "own" a thread?

I was just wondering Disers take on this. If an OP does not like the direction a thread is going do they 'own" the thread and have a right to shut it down? I see threads as conversations and just because I may start a conversation does not mean I have the right to direct where that conversation goes.

This question is not directed at any particular poster or thread. I am just curious about peoples thoughts on this.

No, but I think any poster has the right to request a thread be shut down if people are straying off subject and giving other people a very hard time.

It's up to the mods to decide whether or not to actually shut down.

Well, some people here are known for hijacking a thread. I wont name any names.

But, if the OP gets upset or offended..they can ask the mods to close a thread.

I do understand that the OP can request a thread be shut down but to me that may be close to not liking how the conversation is going and not allowing people to finsh the conversation without you.

What does it mean to "own" a thread? To have the power to request a thread's closing (and subsequently have that request filled)?

In some of the other discussion groups I have witnessed, threads often do stray, with or without the OP. If the OP puts it out there, I almost feel as if it no longer "belongs" to them. It becomes an open topic for the community to discuss.


These things may differ from community to community, I suppose.

It doesn't matter much what we think about who owns a thread. From what I've seen, the administration takes the position that the OP does "own" a thread to the extent that they can ask to have it closed.
