Dodge was suing Lake Mary, FL High School over the use of a copy of its Dodge Ram logo.

Seems the logo had been in use for several years and it was going to cost well over $100,000 to replace the logo everywhere (incl. the gym floor)

Just heard on local news (WOFL) that Dodge will allow Lake Mary HS to keep using it. Perhaps allowing them to license it for a much smaller fee?

Probably will be a bit of rejoicing at my DD's school tomorrow. :)

how did they come to use the logo in the first place?

And an update:

http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/ne...ed:+SentinelSchoolZone+(Sentinel+School+Zone)

In exchange for allowing limited use of the logo on certain school items, Chrysler will be declared the school’s business partner. Under the agreement the school will “promote Chrysler as its partner” and is required to post signs in the gym and on or near the park benches stating “Lake Mary: Proud Partner of Chrysler.”

Chrysler came in for a lot of local criticism for coming down hard on Lake Mary High for illegally using its trademark ram’s head logo. We wrote about it and you responded, almost uniformly with the stand that yes, the school did something wrong, but no, Chrysler shouldn’t whack the school with a giant club. Legal action had been threatened if the school did not stop using the logo and remove it from everything from athletic team uniforms to the gym floor, which would have been a co$tly proposition.

But under a new agreement reached Monday between attorneys for Chrysler and the School Board, the logo can remain on the gym floor, outside park benches and wrestling mats until those items are worn out in the course of normal use and need replaced.

ugh...

From comments at that 2nd link in the OP, my guess is some web-savvy student, perhaps, lifted the logo and used it...somewhere around 10 years ago or so.

This is great. I heard that Disney is allowing the University of Oregon to keep using its Disney-designed mascot, saying they acknowledge he's not Donald. What's going on here with all these corporations lightening up? :woohoo:

Saw that on the local news this eve. Umatilla HS had some problems from Univ of Miami for using the U symbol, they had to replace it. My Daughters school mascot is the Hornets.

If the school is using a copywriten image without permission I have no sympathy for them. Be original or pay for the rights, don't just copy. Anyone who is designing or approving a mascot, logo, or slogan should have a patent attorney verifying they aren't infringing on any copywrite.

The Oregon Duck thing is ridiculous though. A duck is not Donald Duck. If they had a mascot that looked like Donald they should be sued. Just using a duck is not the same as using Donald Duck.

Speaking of the Dodge logo, am I the only person who thinks it resembles a uterus and fallopian tubes?

Or am I just crazy?

Well, this is a bit different. The duck does look a lot like Donald, maybe an evil twin or cousin or some such. But it was ok with Walt, so doesn't that make it ok in perpetuity? See the Wikipedia article.

I agree completely.
