Do your parents ever push you too hard?

I'm just wondering.

My Florida family came up this past week and my cousin was venting to me on how much her mom is pushing her into things and how stressed she gets.

Michelle, 16 - 10th grader- my cousin, plays 3 different sports, takes honor classes, does community work, takes SAT classes, plays piano, and is looking at colleges all because of her parents influence and pushing her. At the middle to end of eleventh grade they will have her apply for colleges.

Now as she's telling me this, i'm thinking.

You're in 10th grade! i can understand the honor classes, community work, and different sports but looking at colleges, sat classes, and getting ready to start preparing college applications.... isn't it a bit early? Shouldn't those come next year

my aunt even scolded my mom for not pushing me and my older brother (who is in college) to do these things.
gerlacksh.

i realize alittle pressure is good... but isn't that a bit much?

so do your parents overwork/push you?

Well, it's not really that early. Alot of people plan during 10th/11th grade so they can relax more during 12th grade. Although it doesn't appear to be the case here. I'm planning colleges already, and I'm in 10th grade. It's so I can have more time to chill in 12th grade, and just get the best grades I can.

I'm looking at colleges too but i meant they are taking her on college tours.

nope. and they dont need to. i push myself and beat myself up mentally sometimes. i have to do the best or i am not satisfied. i have to be the best or i am not satisfied. i've tried numerous times to ease up on myself...........it's just hard. what i have done though is tell myself i am not gonna always be the best and to get over it. but as for pushing me to do something, they dont do anything. i make my own choics and they are perfectly fine with it.:)

Of course some parents push you too much. Parents don't notice the stress their putting on you. They think that it dosen't really bug you and that you should have a great future.

About the college apps, take it from someone who's gone through the process:

It's NEVER too early to start visiting colleges. It'll only be more stressful if you leave everything for your Senior year. The thing that isn't always necessary is SAT classes. I didn't take one course and I did better than most people who took classes (except Math, but that's always the case with me).

throughout my life its always been "pass that math grade or you cant...." whatever the "big thing" at the time may have been. ive been threatened with so many things: disney, cons, my costumes, drama events, friends, interent, sewing machine.. just to scare me into passing math.

now that im planning on moving to orlando in june, mom says, in order for her to be able to help me for a while i have to start college as soon as i possibly can and take on a full load, not just some classes. i cant just take a few months to get situated and comfortable with a job and money situations, etc. i have to start college right away. id rather not, but i know im going to need the help.

its not so extreme, but i have always had my mom breathing down my neck all my "school life". it just sort of gets old after a while.

seriously, are you my twin!?

I am looking at colleges and I am in the 8th grade. I have only taken tours of UGA and GT because they are close to me. I only think that your parents push you too hard if you don't enjoy it. I enjoy doing that sort of stuff and have been planning my future since 4th grade. Yeah I am a bug nerd.

Don't worry PeterPan#1Fan, I'm a nerd too. I'm planning my move to Florida already, and it's not for 2.5 years!

I push myself into stress. And even if I exceed, and someone compliments me, I take it for granted. I always snap back that a 96% is horrible.

I push myself way into stress..A habit of having Anxiety and Perfectionism.. For example: In New Jersey, I was a member of 5 clubs, worked 30 hours a week, and in honor classes. Here in Kansas City, I'm an officer in 2 clubs, member of 4 clubs, looking for a job, in all honors and have 4 nights of art lessons. I'm insane..and I know it. I like crazyness, I hate procrastination. I'd rather be doing something every second than not doing something.

Honestly. No. I push myself.
My parents hate the sport I do.
It is far away, expensive and un common.
I choose to do it, its my passion.
If you push yourself, then its worth it.
Don't get me wrong, my parents support me, but I push myself.

I am in the 9th grade and I beat myself up about my grades. My parents have always pushed me to do better and I know I CAN do better. I have ALLOT of trouble with math aka Algebra....I always have. It just happens to be all of my friends' best subject so, if I slip up, it REALLY shows. I feel horrible when that happens. :guilty:

I took the ACT a few weeks ago and I made a 19. Here, you have to have a 21 to get TOPS (a scholoship program) and a 26 to get EVERYTHING paid for, so I did okay on that. Right now I have no clue what I want to be when I get older....That scares me, sometimes.....My friends at least have general Ideas of what they want to get into....

I plan to got to LA Tech, LSU, ULM, or maybe start out at a community collage to get adjusted.
:confused3
