do you wear gloves for housework?

I met a friend for coffee and she commented on how soft my hands are, and that I must not do any housework...lol. I told her that I do and that I wear gloves. She was surprised that I wore gloves for everyday tasks, she only wears rubber gloves for heavy duty cleaning. That got me thinking...I got my glove wearing habits from my college roommate and she from her mom. Her mom was the type that would change and make up before Dad gets home from work. I'm Asian and grew up in a working household where make up/extra grooming products were non existent. So I thought glove wearing was an American housewife tradition. Now I wear rubber gloves for all housework. Disposable latex gloves when I cook, cotton gloves for general around the house stuff. I put on cotton gloves to open the mails, open a package or a carton, put away grocery. Am I weird? or is this a common thing?

oh..and the gloves saves my manicure...lol

No I don't wear gloves for anything around the house.

Um... yeah, I'd say that's weird! Sorry.

I only use gloves if I'm doing something particularly dirty/messy or involving chemicals (like bleach or other cleaning products).

Wow--I would say that is pretty weird.

I wear rubber gloves for anything concerning cleaners, but I've never heard of anyone wearing cotton gloves for day to day tasks. My hands are soft as a baby's.

I think I have a pair of rubber gloves around somewhere in case I have to bleach something.

It's old-fashioned but not weird. Why not protect your hands?

I would wear gloves for dishwashing but the few times I wash dishes I tend to forget. I use the dishwasher or the guys do the dishes.

I don't do much scrubbing either, if I can avoid it, but if I did, I would wear gloves.

I have eczema on my hands, so I use rubber gloves for anything involving cleansers.

I'm a museum professional (well, was - I'm home with my son right now) and we use cotton gloves for handling artifacts (so skin oils don't affect the object)... I wasn't aware there was another use for cotton gloves. :lmao:

I don't know anyone who uses gloves unless their hands are directly in a cleaning solvent. Gloves for cooking? Even my OCD grandmother who scrubbed trees and the sidewalk on her hands and knees didn't wear gloves for cooking. Whatever floats your boat OP but I think you could save yourself some bucks and give up the cooking gloves.

Wow...I'm laughing as I'm reading the responses and typing with the thin latex gloves on my hands...lol

I AM WEIRD!!

and I thought it was just a normal American housewife habit!

It's too late, I'm so used to cooking with gloves, I'll be lost without them!!!

Thanks everybody...

No I have never worn gloves, even though I probably should. My hands are so dry and scaly.

Don't even think about it twice. Different strokes for different folks. That is what makes the world go around.:thumbsup2

I wear gloves for hand washing dishes but that is about it.

The only time I wear gloves is if I'm doing gardening. I've never worn them in the house for cleaning or anything like that.

But I could see someone using gloves for cleaning in the house if they are very particular about their nails and spend money on regular manicures.

I never wear gloves; but now I'm thinking I probably should when washing dishes, etc.
