Do you wait and save for the trip you want or make the trip fit your budget at the time?

We tend to do both depending on the year and how soon/badly we want to go on vacation. We decide what kind of vacation we want to take first and then if it's not a deluxe version then we look at the calendar and schedule it since we always save enough in our vacation fund for a yearly value disney trip. If it is a deluxe version or longer than our usual week trip with 5 days in the parks then we figure out about how much more it's going to cost us and see if we will have saved that much in the vacation fund by the time we would ideally like to go. If we want to go sooner than we can save that much money then we put the vacation off until a time we know we will have saved that much.

We don't really save in the sense we're saving specifically for vacation, we just generally aren't big spenders and we don't carry any debt, so when a trip comes up we want to take, we book it. We pay for all the components as they come up. We take at least one 2 week or two 1 week vacations a year and then often add in multiple weekend and long weekend trips. Our Disney trips have mostly fallen into the long weekend catagory lately as we've been concentrating on seeing other things.

We save the money to fit the exact trip we want! We only go every 2-3 years and want to stay on property and eat all the foods. Our 2023 trip is 11 nights and we are staying at WL, CBR and Riviera. We basically figured out the cost a couple years ago and saved that amount.
