Do you train for your Disney trip?

With all the walking involved in a Disney trip, I'm wondering if people 'train' for the trip by walking.

I work in NYC and walk to the train in the am so I get 1-2 miles of walking in everyday. But I try to take longer walks on the weekends to help get ready for all the walking. DS is an energizer bunny and can walk/run all day long but we're doing some walks w/DD to get her ready for all the walking. We'll have a stroller but I'm hoping we don't have to bring it to MGM or our short MK morning.

We 'trained' a bit for our last trip and could whip back and forth between Soarin and TT with ease and make record time on the hike to CP in WS

We train for the trip. I normally walk at least a mile a day and my DD rides her bike. About a month before our trip she will walk with me instead of ride her bike.

He is going to resist, but about 2 months out I plan on getting my youngest DS13 to start walking with me. He is the only one I think is going to get tired and cranky. The only "sport" he participates in is golf so I am really worried about him giving out on us.

This reminds me of some friends I went with one year. This couple friends of mine were both HEAVY smokers and drinkers and very out of shape, but not real over weight just about 30lbs or so. After the first day of a single park they were both spent and acted the rest of the trip like they were 90 years old, stayed in the hotel most of the rest of the time. Sounds like you are already in great shape if you do a mile or 2 a day. I probably should do more walking before my trips for they do wear me out, but I run on adrenalin so I keep going strong the whole time despite the fact that I will get tired about half way into it.

I don't train - and until about 3 weeks ago, I'd haven't been exercising much in years! I never seem to have trouble walking at WDW, though! :rotfl: Sometimes, I actually lose weight while I'm there!

Recently, I started swimming to exercise. Now my kids and dh will REALLY have to hustle to keep up with me. ;)

I plan on dragging my fiancee out on walks more often so we are more in shape for our trip. :cool1:

I'm a big believer in training before wdw vacations. If the weather is nice I walk wherever I can.

Does he walk the golf course or take a cart? Walking the golf course carrying your own golf bag is A LOT of walking and great exercise! DH plays golf and always walks the course - he can outwalk me anywhere we go!!!!

I try to walk before but have not this time it will be interesting how I do.

I've been trying to loose some pounds so my knees and back don't have to carry that much, and be able to stand in line more confortably.

Also been exercising specially the legs :)

I work at Wal Mart supercenter. Im just a kid pretty much so naturally they got me outside pushing carts all day. I've been doing it all summer (including when it was 117 degrees out) so I am plenty in shape. Its my GF Im worried about.

It's so funny that you posted this but so nice! I had to respond to this and say yes, I sure do prepare! About a month to go before the trip, I will begin walking about 3 miles a day and then change off and bicycle 8 miles the next day. It does help for me to get the extra strength in my legs, since as I'm sure others do, I walk for morning to midnight most days through the parks and afterwards so I need the training.

Yep, we're all in training for our trip in November!

We were a mess the first time we went in 1999! By the end of that trip, my left leg was almost numb, my legs and back ached and my DH completely aggravated his sciatica (sp?) nerve and needed to go to doctor and physical therapy for it! Not fun!

We have a lot of down time built into our upcoming trip, but we still need to train for our trip.

Happy walking, everyone!!

I'n not really in the greatest of shape, and I planned to train but ended up tendonitis in my ankle and the doctor put the kabash on training. Had to wear a big old klunky boot until it cleared up. So I was worried.
Once we got there, no problems :goodvibes ! I think I was so high on adrenaline it helped it all along :Pinkbounc . My only problem was a really huge blister that I got on the ball of my feet from my (what I thought were) broken in shoes. So I was walking gingerly our last day, but that was WS, and you can take your time there. We did alot, up all day and late into the night with a TS everyday.
Still want to be in better shape for next time (just overall feeling better) - with better shoes :thumbsup2 !

Oh YEAH!!

I have to 'train' my DH is a lettercarrier and he walks about 17 miles a day, so he only knows how to walk fast and faster - there's no slowdown for him. I've started to walk an hour everyday and I'm getting in 1.5miles a day right now. The walking doesn't hurt getting rid of those love handles any either! :goodvibes

The adventure this year is that we're not letting DD7 get into the stroller that we're going to rent for DD4. The other adventure is that MIL will be coming with us and I'm hoping that she's going to be renting an ECV. Just as long as it can go at least 20 mph so she can keep with DH.

The benefit this year is that I work on my feet 4 hours everyday, so I know my feet aren't going to hurt. My calves are another story.

I have a question for everyone:
I am overweight but pretty agile (sp?) LOL, i can walk all day long but its just my feet that kill me, does anybody else's feet hurt???

Brooke :sunny:

I trained DH didn't, we are going again in Feb 07 and DH has already said that he will FOR SURE be training this time! :thumbsup2

Sounds like me, Brooke. I can walk all day and my legs/back/etc. are fine, but my feet? :sad1: Wish there was some way to train for that. Maybe next time I go to WDW I need to let them callus up for awhile? Eww...

We don't train...we just "Stroll". A few years back we realized that we were getting ourselves quite tired out early in our vacations by "running" the parks. My DH decided that we ought to try slowing the pace down, since we would still be able to do all the things we wanted to.

Now when we start going to fast he just looks at us and says..."Stroll" :sunny:

No, I'm on my feet all the time at work. But I still have to protect my feet at WDW because they get hot and sweat...wait, they "glow," right? That's what mom said. Men sweat, women glow. ;)

I think lots of people are ready to walk, but not ready to stand. The standing will kill your feet if you aren't used to it and there is lots of standing required at WDW, too. That is something the UG doesn't mention in its Sgt. Blisterblaster section. :)
