Do you tip at Home Depot

Seriously, I've had this question too. After reading on this board how people tip for everything, I went to purchase stones for a rock wall from Home Depot. A young man about killed himself loading several hundred pounds of rock into my truck on a hot day. I offered him a tip and he refused it and was embarrassed. It never would have occurred to me (before reading it here) that I was supposed to tip professional furniture movers etc., but not tip some poor kid who is working for minimum wage hauling stone in the hot sun.

Wow, they help you to the car i nhome depot??? NOT the ones around here..I would actually tip them if they did help but the extent of their help is handing you a few pieces of rope on the way out so you can tie whatever it is you have up on the roof yourself....never had anyone help me unload anything!
BTW..I also tip the guy who ties my christmas tree to the roof of my car since my neighbor did that one year and they worked only for tips!

These tipping rules are so darn confusing! I do know that when I went to get my hand sewed back on at the emergency room (I cut it off making bird houses again. I loves me making the bird houses) I threw a couple of bucks into a cup at the nurses station and it turned out to be someone's coffee. I guess you don't tip the ER nurses when you're getting your hand sown back on?? I'm writing to Mrs. Manners when I get feeling back (It was my writing hand) just for clarification.

I'd be careful about tipping retail employees - maybe ask a manager what the store policy is first. The majority of the major retail chains I know have a strict policy against tipping. I know in my company, accepting a tip is considered grounds for termination. Some younger employees may be tempted by a few extra bucks and take it only to have the wrong person find out and lose their job over it. I have had customers bring us token gifts like donuts, candy or a flower for us helping them what they consider "above and beyond" our job description

Trust me, the majority of retail workers are not making minimum wage. I hire people in at a minimum of $2 over minimum wage and I'm not in a competitive market.

And besides - their job as a sales associate is to give good customer service so they are just doing their job.

I bought a generator at Home Depot yesterday. Offered a tip to the young men who put it in my car and they declined the tip. I was impressed, or perhaps they declined because I only offered $5???
