Im just curious.

I have gotten back to taking vitamins again ( no Lycopene this time  ) and an aspirin a day for my heart.

It helps while Im adjusting to my new lifestyle I think but I will take the aspirin for the rest of my life probably. The cardiologist told me an baby aspirin a day meant the difference between making it to the hosiptal and help and not making it. period.

That was enough to make me take it

so do you take vitamins or any else to help you while you lose weight?

Yes, I take a multivitamin, 2 fish oil capsules, 1000 mg L-Carnitine, and extra Calcium and Potassium.

I take a kids chewable multivitamin!

Yes I do take multi vitamines, fish oil and calcium and magnesium. It just helps me to be sure I'm getting what I need. Usually, though, after visiting fitday, I find I've managed to squeeze in most of my RDA's, except calcium. (I eat lots of fruits and veggies, so I'm pretty well covered there.)

Keep the Faith!

I take the One A Day Weightsmart vitamin, plus Green Tea Extract (because green tea helps speed up your metabolism) I have to take 100G of Iron everyday due to low iron problems and I take calcium with extra D in it. I'll probably add "C" to the mix in October to help with the colds. (so I don't get them)

I will now have to be on vitamins the rest of my life.
I take 2 flintstones chewables a day, 2 calcium tablets(chewables) 1 biotin, and when I force myself I take my iron. (they make me really, really sick) I also get a B12 shot once a month, and that too will be the rest of my life.

I have a lot more energy now than I have for the last 6 yrs. It's wonderful. I feel better and I know I look a lot better too.

I take a multivitamin and calcium. I'm thinking about adding L-carnitine too :)

After reading this I guess I am going to stop at the store on the way home and pick up some L-Cartinine and some Green Tea Extract. Hope I can take them both together, I want to boos this metabolism as much as I can.
I take my one a day and my calcium, and all my blood pressure meds, but never thought other suppelments would really make much of a difference.

Can someone please tell me what L-Cartinine is and what is does.

Thanks

Multi vitamin,calcium+d,fish oil,vitamin e,c+rose hips.

I take a multivitamin and calcium.
I would also like to know what L-carnitine is and what it does.
Thanks

Thanks for asking this question. I've been meaning to figure out what I should be taking. :)

From Dr. Atkins book:

L-carnitine is involved in fat transport. When carnitine is deficient, overweight people have difficulty getting into lipolysis and the secondary process of ketosis. As a nutrient, carnitine has been used to correct cardiomyopathy, help stabilize heart rhythm, lower triglyceride levels and increase HDL (the good cholesterol). For these conditions, the dosage ranges between 1,000 and 2,000 mg daily. For weight loss, a typical dose is 1,500 mg.

Another weight loss aid is co-enzyme q10 (CoQ10) which plays an important role in heart function. I often prescribe it to people over 40, usually in a dose of 100 mg a day. Since it works in collaboration with carnitine and chromium to mobilize fat, it is also useful for someone aiming to slim down.

Dr. Atkins recommends:

1) Basic #3 formula - three times a day (or equalivent brand)
2) chromium - up to 1,000 mcg daily (be sure to count the amount of chromium contained in your multivitamin)
3) essential oils - three a day, either in a multiple, or individual fish oil, borage oil, and flaxseed oil capsules
4) L-carnitine and Co!10 - if you feel that your metabolic resistance to weight loss is high

Lisa thanks for the info. I'm not doing Atkins, so do you think that these supplements would be good for me to take? Right now I only take a multivitamin and I've just started taking a natural diuretic capsule. So I don't know whether I should be thinking about taking something else.

Thanks

A friend of mine has been taking L-carnitine (1 tbsp liquid, right before working out) but her doctor told her she had to stop because it was causing her blood pressure to rise significantly. Does anyone know anything about that? Is it a common side effect? I haven't taken it but I was curious.

I see my surgeon on friday for my 2 mth post-op visit and I am going to ask him about this.
Geez I can't wait to get weighed! :p

 I am concerned about taking any supplements; I wish there were a “textbook” answer for this. To take or not to take…that is the question. What to take, how to take, why to take…

I take a multi vitamin and calcium, and I just ran out of the essential oils capsules so haven’t taken any this week.

At my last visit to the doc, 5 weeks ago, I asked about supplements. I took my printout from fitday.com with me in case I needed to show what the reading was based on my consumption. (It apparently was not anything my doc wished to see.)…I wonder about all of this.

I was told by the general internist that any brand multivitamin supplement would do and to continue with the calcium. I inquired about taking the “natural” vitamin capsules versus the other varieties available. Doc said as long as I took vitamins, any would work and to save myself money instead of going for the expensive natural brand. I haven’t bought any other vitamins, but will soon as I am almost out of my “natural” vitamin supplements. I still wonder about the “natural” versus other variety as I usually am sensitive to most meds and do not digest them well.

I have found Citracal calcium tablets work for me. I am happy about that because I couldn’t even take other brands well. So, forever I haven’t taken any calcium—much to the horror of my orthopedic doctor. My general internist wasn’t concerned about this at all saying that I could get enough calcium in my diet…I wonder about all of this.

I was going to ask about the L-Carnitine…thanks for answering that one. Not sure that I will add that in as I so hesitate to take anything.
