Have 3 mini-vacas coming up over the summer - 1st one July 4th wknd. Im planning on stopping at a grocery store once we get checked into our room and have a refrigerator close by - lots of my diet food is fruits/vegs/yogurt. Thank goodness I booked all 3 places w/a fridge. (Last year we went rustic a few times and didnt even have a bathroom.)

So do you let yourself splurge on your short trips or wait for the biggie? (I know easier said than done so thats why Im planning now on how to avoid ICE CREAM)

You have been posting some great threads recently! I know you have your "big" cruise vacation coming up in Nov, too, and that this vacation-eating thing has been on your mind (saw your post about cruise food over on the cruise board too!:) Anyway, I think it is good you are trying to get a game plan when it comes to this vacation thing.

Having just returned recently from a week at WDW, I can tell you that I wanted to (and did!) enjoy some treats while on vacation, but I did not throw my entire healthy eating plan out the window. My goal on vacations now is to try and maintain my weight, as the last thing I want to do is have to contend with a gain on vacation and then have to work hard to lose the same weight twice!

I guess I am trying to look at this whole weight loss thing as a lifestyle. I figure I need to eat healthy for life, and it is okay to include some treats once in awhile in that plan. But for me, balance is important and is key to keeping the weight off.

While at WDW I ate a very light breakfast, consisting of fresh fruit or a protein bar. I tried the foods I wanted to try but never finished a plate of anything, always keeping in mind the importance of portion control. I got my walking in (of course...I was at WDW for cryin out loud!) and did not gain weight during the trip. I did try desserts and I did drink a few more alchoholic drinks than I had planned, but I survived without an extra pound on the hips!

I do hear of people who throw out their healthy eating plan while on vacation, but personally I would find it too difficult to get back on track when I returned from vacation if I had this approach.

thats what Im thinking - if I dont watch it over vaca I'll need the motivation to get started and restarted over and over again - at least if i keep track and watch the diet (even if i have occasional blowouts) its better than restarting each time

I choose not to think of my way of eating (low carb) as me being on a diet. If I thought of it that way, I would constantly be focusing on the things I can't have. Instead, I think of it as a way of life, and focus on the variety of foods that are available to me. And, I'm happy. I imagine that when I go to WDW in December, I will allow myself a treat or two, but it will be me deciding to have that treat . . . not me throwing everything out the window by blowing my diet. It's really a matter of me being in control of what goes in my mouth, just as I control other areas of my life.

Do you see what I mean??

195 days and counting . . . again!

Since I have started Atkins, we haven't been on a vacation, but I don't have any plans to cheat while on one! I figure this is my new way of eating and it will be a lifelong commitment...I don't want to even try anything remotely off the plan for fear of wanting more! LOL

In a couple of weeks we are going to Lake George, NY for the week, so that will be the real test! :):)
