do you or did you tell family/friends about your dvc purchase???

Our family knows and most of our friends. They all know that we love to take our kids on vacations and that the kids love to go to WDW.

Aloha,
Jen

We just bought in January at AKV after spending 9 nights at SSR with friends on their points. When we purchased...both my husbands family and my family were really excited for us. Especially once we explained that being a family of 5 we would need to book two rooms everywhere else, double beds etc. The best part was telling them they could come with us. This December my kids are going to have a blast at Disney with my mom and my husbands parents altogether and not crammed. Can hardly wait.:yay:

Told some friends about DVC...

Told Family almost immediately...I was busting at
the sides! It, still to this day, and I wonder how many
more are like me, amazes me that I own a piece
of the Mouse!

I still find people who own timeshares @ other resorts
that when I mention I bought into WDW...they look
at me in disbelief..."What do you mean, you own @
WDW?" I just smile back. To think I bought @ SSR
because of a kiosk I came across while staying @
the Polynesian in "04...if it weren't for that CM
calling me over..."God bless her!":dance3:

I'm amazed to find other neighbors and friends who own timeshares, once you mention DVC it all comes out. :lmao: We have 2 Westgate owners on our small cul-de-sac. Since we also have a non-dvc unit we talk about II and their competitors and exchanging. Another friend has an ongoing RCI search for Europe that I'll be interested to see if she gets(I think it's 09 and 10 summer).

I don't bring it up much, as most people have no clue or the one that thought she was a DVC member because she had a Disney Visa card.

Though it is funny that our elementary school has 3 DVC families(ourselves, Rock n' Robin and another family who bought on DCL the other year).

thanks everyone for all your thoughts on this subject from what i have read we aren't alone with people in our lives not understanding a dvc. However we are very excited about this dvc that we just signed for the other day and if I am happy and my family that's all that matters :cool1:

Hey aDVCguy we are neighbors, I am from East Islip :goodvibes

Thanks,
Cheryl

Howdy neighbor!
East Islip..right around the corner...so to speak!

Speaking of around the corner...I have a neighbor
that's no more than 70 yards from me...owns @ OKW
and Boardwalk...a veteran DVCer who helped me out
during the purchase phase.
You're going to find qiute a few DVCers around our neck
of the woods....I was pleasantly surprised!:cool1:

Well, I generally don't say much but then it usually took me until the 5th month or so to "confess" to my pregnancies! DH is usually the one who opens his mouth...he has told EVERYONE and preaches DVC regularly to people at work, and has "recruited" a few to talk to our guide. He has a sister and brother in law who are DVC owners and they were pretty quiet about it. Our kids know, of course, but I haven't told them about our add on yet...it won't really matter to them cuz they don't keep track of the points anyway...they just know we're headed for another big family trip in a couple of years. ':thumbsup2 Nuf said!

My brother bought years ago, I thought at the time it wasn't a good deal. In 2004 I decided to check out the DVC system and now own 1,410 points. It's a fever you can't get medicine for (thank god).

OK Starr, for some reason the "Disney Visa" thing cracked me up big time. Could be because my DSIL said the same thing last night when I told her and DBIL that we were buying DVC (did it today by the way) She thinks we're nuts for paying $20K for something she gets for free:rotfl2:

ps. my wife got the brains in the family, and the looks thank God.

We haven't told anyone and purchased our first points in Dec 06. We hear enough "Going Again" that we even took one trip for a long weekend without telling any family.

My parents even have timeshare somewhere else, but they made comments once, when we had first looked into it in 2004, that it was so overpriced that we haven't said a word.

We told everyone and they do not all understand:confused3 However it is my most favorite place to vacation and it makes my family happy:love: That is the only thing that matters to me anyway:thumbsup2 They don't get it but sure would go if I invited them to come along:rotfl2:

We didn't share with anyone except our Disney loving friends-you know, people who would be happy for us and share in the joy. :woohoo:

The family and other friends just don't get it, so we didn't see a need to share our purchase with them because they already think we're nuts. :scared1:

how true, how true :rotfl2:

in the beginning i told a family member and they tried to stop me from being able to buy and said i would just loose my money. then i told another family member who loves disney as much as i do and the reaction was favorable. i have not found a single friend who understands. i think they got old faster than i did. my daughter and grandchildren love disney and since we always went together they really appreciate the difference between regular resort rooms and dvc. the extra room makes a world of difference.

it is strange that dvc gives you a feeling of belonging to something as grand as disney. you do have ownership but you are also recognized as someone who belongs and cares about the entire disney wellbeing.:goodvibes

and another really big point is that it really saves money on your vacation.;)

It took me a while to look into and understand DVC. More importantly to see if it would work for me and my family. There wer some nay say'ers but didn't have to justify my purchase to anyone but myself. I don't sit there and advertise that I have a Disney timeshare but we do frequently take family members and friends to enjoy it with us. So far, no one has ever said, Oh no, we can't go with you because we don't believe in timeshares. By the same token , even though they've enjoyed it tremendously, not a single sole that I have taken with me has ever bought into DVC. I love Disney, I love to vacation and it works for me!

I purchasesd okw in 1993 and boardwalk in 2003 and will buy the contemporary whenever it opens. I have three kids so three resorts.lol Actually most people I have told have never said anything one way or the other. Close friends have traveled with us for years and have gone to disney and disney cruises etc but have never purchased. The choose to pay cash for the hotel or vacation club room. Every once in a while (usually when I have a hard time getting a reservation I wonder why I purchased) but that is only a momentary thought. Disney is truly a magical place and I relax from the hectic schedules when I am there. I have always left disney wishing I could have stayed longer and wishing I could go right back. Yes some friends don;t like going to disney since they say the lines are too long etc. for me everyone seems to have a special place they like to go. For me it is Disney. I do travel to other parts of the country but I try to get to disney at least once a year. So if friends indicate they don;t like hearing about fun and relaxing times but I agree with the statements above if my friend said I was nuts I am not sure I need a friend like that in my life.

AMEN! We just got off the 7-night Disney Magic cruise and although we also have Marriott's Vacation Club (which we like very much), we also bought into Disney's. I'm not sure we would have done it otherwise (i.e. just talking to the folks that stand at the parks), but the presentation they gave on the ship was very informative and after talking to my husband, we agreed it was the right thing to do because we are going to Disney (alot) anyway. In fact, I had two separate trips booked this fall that I cancelled and transferred to using my DVC points. I already told my DH that I'm not planning on telling the family about it. They don't need to know. They know we have the Marriott Vacation Club (where our home resort also happens to be in Orlando) so I'll let them just think what they want as we have 3 more trips planned for this year.

I told my family and friends about our initial purchase and our first two add-on's.....after that, nope. Don't need anyone to tell me how or where to vacation or how and where to spend my money.

(I think their just jealous ;) )

We bought ours while on a 7 day cruise. When we docked I called my 35yo DS and told him that we had purchased his inheritance while on the cruise! :lmao:
