Do you like fruitcake?

I was listening to a podcast on fruitcake and it got me thinking, I don’t know if I like it or not since I have never tried it.

I’m not a fan of walnuts, pecans, or almonds so their presence immediately turns me off from wanting to try.

As a kid I remember my mom always buying a Claxton fruitcake every Christmas season. She was a fan.

Like you @kdonnel I don't know if I like it or not, I can't remember ever having tried it before. It sounds like something I would like. Maybe I will make or buy one to try.

I don't think I've ever had one. Maybe once - but it couldn't have been that memorable. :rotfl2:

I do like it - when it's good. Most of the packaged or store-bought types aren't that good, and I think that's where it gets a bad rap. It can be amazing though.

My mom made them each year. I enjoyed them then, but it's not something I look for these days.

When I could eat it, no. I hated it.

However, I'm thinking of making a fresh fruit nut free version of fruit cake this year - able to be eaten within the day it's made (so alcohol is a flavoring agent, not a dense cake savior) and with no artificial and oversugared fruits. I haven't gotten to it yet, so I don't know if it gets better with a more modern update, but I can't imagine it would get worse.

I’m not crazy about the flavor of Danish which to me seems to be the same kind of dough. I’m not crazy about the flavor of candied fruit either 😂 I’ve had decent fruit cake. It just never inspired me to make it, or force a craving to seek it out. It’s OK. Plain panettone is much preferred over fruit cake in our house.

I like some fruit cakes, served sliced thin, with unsweetened tea, hot or cold.

What I don't like is when figs are added and those teeny little seeds are like grit.

Claxton was not my favorite but I would eat it when fresh.

Collins Street Bakery - um, ok.

Mom's, rich and heavy but good.

Dried out cakey fruit cake not good. (Made by a friend or relative long ago.)

Off to see if that Panettone I bought before my Disney trip is still unopened....

There are many different kinds of fruitcake out there. They're not all that hard square, pre-wrapped brick. I partically liek German stollen. Even some packaged versions of that can be pretty good. It's not as dense as some kinds. Dense can be good too though - again, when made right.

Never cared for any I have tried over the years. Every recipe uses various combinations of fruits/nuts, so they all tend to be different. Most tend to be made with a very dense cake and likely have some number of ingredients you won't care for.

My dad makes a phenomenal fruit cake. While dense, his is super moist and boozy, filled with lots of fruits (not just the colored candied varieties) and walnuts. Unfortunately, I have a child who is deathly allergic to nuts, so we never have anything like it in our house.
