Do you keep your blinds closed in the summer to keep out the heat?

I keep the shades 1/2way down on the windows facing the sun

My blinds are closed right now! I have the air on and I think it is around 73 in here. If I open the blinds all that heat really warms up the living room. DH can't stand the blinds closed. I know when he gets home he will open them. He is also the type to put a lamp on right next to him and it is sunnier than all get out in the room!!

My blinds are always shut. I don't like the brightness anyway. It is so hot and sticky here and it is hard enough keeping my house cool. The sun comes in through our sliding door and is fading our carpet there. I keep telling DH we need to add a screen room on to the back of the house. I would much rather be cool than to HOT.
