Hi we are thinking about moving our lcd tv and hang it above the fireplace? Do you do it? Is it going to ruin it? Thanks;)

we have had one above our glass fireplace for 3 years and have had no trouble. I run the fireplace a lot also. As long as you have a mantel I think you are ok

Yes, we have over the fireplace in the keeping room and we're instaling one over the fireplace in the family room too. We have had no problems.

I don't like watching TV that high up. TV's are not pictures. I think they should go on the wall at eye level. Putting a TV high up like framed art is a common mistake that people make.

We have ours above the fireplace for about 4 years now. We've had no problems with it and have a fire going most days in the winter!

Yes, but we have a shelf / mantle between the fireplace & TV. Your TV manual should tell you how HOT the TV can get. Without the mantle, ours would have been too hot. The mantle blocks the heat and now is fine. DH tested it out with a thermometer to make sure.

We just moved into a new house and the builders made a special place above the fireplace for the TV -- but there is no mantle! We have gas logs and can't run them for more than a couple of minutes because it gets too hot. So now we either have to move the TV - which I don't want to do b/c it looks good where it is and there is not another good place for it or not run the fire. Someone suggested getting blower so that the heat would go out rather than up. Does anyone have experience with this?

We did a test run with ours above our fireplace. I really liked the way it looked up there; but I hated actually watching TV at that level, and it was even worse for the kids.

We went with a nice, low corner unit instead. The top of our TV sits about level with the mantle now, so it's a big difference!

For those who have TV's up high... is watching at that angle something you just get used to, or do you really like it?

We thought about putting ours up there but then we did an expirement one day by laying down on the floor and couch and looking at the pictures currently hanging there...our necks made the decision to put it on a corner entertainment stand! ;)

ours in mounted on a tv stand right next to our fireplace. There isnt' enough room for our TV above the fireplace to be mounted (it would have to sit on the mantle and the mantle could not hold our tv).

It would also be really uncomfortable because the top of the TV would be at the ceiling.

Nope too high to watch comfortably. I hadn't even considered the heat factor so I guess that's one more reason I'm glad that we went with a stand.

Yes, we like it. The sofas are far enough from the tv that it is comfortable.

I like it, but our couches set quite a ways back from the TV and we don't lay down to watch in the living room. I think I'd have gotten used to it even if I didn't like it immediately, though, because I think the living room looks so much nicer without an entertainment center. We just have too many windows for an additional piece of furniture to fit without the room looking cluttered.

We had a very large print hanging over our fireplace for many years. After a few years we noticed that it had discoloration from the fires. We did not use the fireplace very often, either. It was a woodburning fireplace with glass doors and no mantle. It was approximately 4 feet above the fireplace on a stone wall.

What do you guys do with all the extra equipment? I have way too much attached to the TV to ever be able to move it. My current TV has a DVR, DVD player and wireless internet all hooked up to it. I also have drawers to hold all the DVDs.

My TV is right next to the fireplace, but frankly I would still have to have a hutch of some sort to house all the extraneous equipment. I called a cable/tech guy and the cost to have all the custom wiring, plus wall hanger, plus install fees was somewhere between $500 and $1000. I opted for a cute stand to warehouse it all

Wondering this as well...

We went with a solid oak stand with glass doors (so the remotes work and little fingers can't push buttons) and two drawers for the gaming/blu ray stuff. We got it at the local mom & pop Amish furniture store. It contains:
- a HD TiVo
- Blu Ray player
- Wii (and balance board)
- Xbox 360
- 400 disc DVD changer
- receiver
- Wii & 360 games and controllers
- Blu Ray disks (the regular DVDs live in the DVD changer and their cases are boxed up in the basement)

There is no way we could go just TV on the wall without something to house the other stuff. My husband has no intention of downsizing his audio/video collection. The cabinet was expensive, but we only had to buy it once, so I got a good one. I couldn't find a cheap one that had drawers and glass front doors.

Of course, we aren't the typical electronics household. We are the only people I know with a Blu Ray player and TiVo in their bathroom linen closet (there is sometimes a computer in there too)... It all connects to our bedroom TV through the wall and we use an infared repeater to make the universal remote control it all.

I don't like it up there, so no. My neighbor kept suggesting to us it would look good but to me it's too high up.
