The reason I ask is that we need 3 seats and there are only two left at a discount. We have 1 adult and 2 kids that are traveling.

My plan was to book my DH and one child with those two seats and then pay the more expensive price for the one ticket that would be a child. If I indicate their age and there is no adult on the itinerary, it looks like it flags them as an Unacompanied minor, which he is not. Can I book him an adult seat and not indicate an age at all? Does it really matter since they don't offer a discount for kids tickets anyway?

there is no kids fare so that part really doesn't matter. However, I always have to put everyone's birthdate on the reservation when we fly. So, I think that is going to be a stumbling block for you.

My only concern is that if you book them separately, they will be on different record locaters. That could be a problem if there is a delay or equipment change or something. You want everyone on the same record so that they are treated as one group and not two separate groups. You don't want one group rerouted via Denver and another rerouted via Chicago or if seats get switched they won't know to keep you all together and that could be a problem for some people.

The age requirement when booking air tickets now is a TSA requirement, not Delta's, and any adult dates of birth must match the government issued photo I.D. used at the airport. But you are right that putting in the correct age may flag an UM, or cause problems with seating if there's a change in the type of aircraft.

As a travel agent, I can book two separate records and link them with a note that the sole passenger is not an UM, but I don't think there's a way to do that on the public web site. If you book the two separate records, call Delta with both reservation record locators and ask that those records be noted "to complete party of three with DL (and the other record locator)". This may take you a couple of phone calls since the call centers aren't very well versed for anything other than a normal run-of-the-mill question. You might ask to be connected to a supervisor to put those notes in both your records and hope that they understand what you're trying to do.

The other option is just to pay the higher fare and have all three of them on the same record. Not ideal cost-wise, but can avoid problems on the travel day.

How much of a difference is it? You may want to call Delta but I think they have an extra charge to book over the phone.

It is a difference of $40.00 so I am wondering if it is even worth the hassel. I know that there is a charge to book anything with Delta over the phone and knowing them, it is more than $40.00.

I just checked their website, it's $20 per ticket. You could purchase the 2 and then call them for the third.

You could call Delta and explain the problem and ask them if they can waive the phone booking charge. Ask for a supervisor if they refuse.

You will not be charged an UM fee for booking the child separately from the other two. Book two itineraries. One with the single child and one with the adult and child. Once you have purchased the tickets call the airline and link the record locater codes. You will not be charged to link the reservations.
